An early version initially called the "Willys Overland" morphed
from military GP, (general purpose), vehicle to the mass produced
CJ, short for "civilian Jeep". More than 1.5 million CJ Jeeps were
built, having continued the same basic body style for 45 years
since the Jeep first appeared. Widely regarded as "America's
workhorse", the CJs have been described as "probably the most
successful utility vehicle ever made". The word Jeep is an acronym
of the letters GP.
The call of the wild, the great outdoors, into the great wide open,
getting a little mud on the tires, all representative of this 1980
CJ5 showing 47,497 non verifiable miles. This Jeep has undergone a
full rust remediation and repaint, engine and transmission rebuild,
upgraded clutch, new fuel pump, water pump, radiator carburetor,
alternator, Best top, new bikini top, frame based half doors, new
brakes front and rear and a new set of Falken WildPeaks weighing n
at 33 inches. Im diggin this Jeep from 1980 and it's like new!

Exterior
All straight and true, and now bathed in Rhino liner paint for the
exterior and its Antique White. Nifty glossy black accenting
presents on the grille, bumpers, new Best soft top and doors, side
view mirrors, and fender guards. True to the Jeep design, which has
remained constant for nearly 60 years, it is ready to take on the
outdoors and whatever it can throw at it. On the back is a set of
tubes for fishing rods and a spare tire holder that doubles as a
multi bike rack. A near perfect black top in denim material has
clear windows in plastic and removable doors. It also includes a
bikini top to really let the wind in your hair. A few areas of
underlying rust bubbling is noted but it's very minor. 15-inch
black painted wheels have 235/75R15 Falken WildPeak AT knobby
rubber wrapping them, including the spare and are all from the 2nd
week of 2017. A very sweet little 4x4 ready for nearly anything,
just point it upward and head on. Is that a high altitude barking
spider off to my passenger's side!?
Interior
A swing of the black denim exterior and steel tubed famed door
reveals the back side of the canvas and inner door workings.
Covering the interior is gray canvas and it is like new. Plastic
windows abound again for weight loss and give panoramic views from
any seating position on the inside. Speaking of which as we slip
inside on the Cadillac high back power leather tan buckets which
are in very nice condition and have integrated headrests and our
consignor is including the factory low back buckets should you want
things more original. Covered in smooth black plastic is a central
console for some extra storage in the center is a large lockable
storage box topped with a storage tray. As we move forward from
this box the floors are finished in Antique White Rhino lining and
have brown floor carpeted floor mats covering them. The long arm
transmission shifter and the factory 4x4 twin stick shifters reside
here just prior to the dash. This dash is also Antique White, all
steel and is peppered with all the essential gauges and then some.
Toggles and pulls abound as does a bank of 12V power outlets and a
USB charger capable plug in. In front of the passenger is a white
steel "Jesus" bar and a glove box door. Fronting the dash is a
factory black steering wheel. Note the front windshield can be
lowered for extra versatility. In back, a brown leather bench
resides for those tag alongs they may need a ride to get them out
of that uncivilized world they were hiking in for the past week.
Also, a roll bar encircles the roofline just in case you are a bit
too ambitious on the vertical climb.
Drivetrain
Under the flip up hood is a gleaming totally rebuilt258ci Inline 6
cylinder mill. It has blue valve coverings and a blue painted block
with no corrosion or even patina under this hood.
Lots-o-aforementioned new parts are on this engine including a new
fuel pump, water pump, radiator, new HEI distributor, plugs and
wires, and alternator. A rew 2-barrel carburetor is feeding it
fossils and air, and on back is a rebuilt 4-speed manual T-176
transmission with a new upgraded clutch and to drive the front
wheels is a Dana 300 transfer case. Front and rear gearing is at
3.54.
Undercarriage
Black paint is everywhere for the floor pans and frame which is
rust free and solid with plenty of new mechanical. Suspension is
all leaf spring and we see freshly redone front disc and rear drums
for braking. No drips or oiling are seen and we note a new fuel
tank and sending unit.
Drive-Ability
I just love the ingenuity that goes into some of the CJ mods and
this one does not disappoint. I climbed in over the rocker bar and
was off to the test track. Here I rode in Cadillac leather comfort
and it did very well, as expected, with great acceleration, solid
bias free panic stopping and good handling. I did go into 4x4 mode,
and it worked well, but did not get to actually climb anything!
Grab your groover, mount the bikes and throw the fishing rods into
those rear mounted tubes and go exploring, climbing, camping and
whatever else we do in the great outdoors. Let's get a little mud
on the tires!
