"Who can resist the beauty of BMW's boxer engine? Their unorthodox
horizontal head configuration and shaft drive has always intrigued
me. There's no denying that Boxer BMWs are bulky looking bikes but
with some smart customization they can be transformed into sleek
looking Cafe Racers." Returnofthecaferacers.com
For auction, a 1987 BMW R80 CS motorcycle showing 15,586 miles, but
the true miles are unknown. This unrestored example is in very good
condition and has added CS fairings and bars along with a number of
other subtle mods. Fresh out of long term storage and ready for
your mechanical touch, this bike will be the talk of the town.
Exterior
The beautifully designed bike has a narrow and upright profile with
a prominent black gas tanks adorned with a double pinstripe of red
and white and of course, the coveted BMW emblem. The pinstriping
continues on the apron and around to the rear cowl as well as
framing the added fairing. A weave textured black leather Corbin
saddle includes a dip for a passenger and foot pegs are in place
below. Exhaust pipes flank the rear wheel like twin barrels of a
rifle while red marker lights are matched with the brake light. The
fairing's windscreen is tinted plastic that wraps over the
handlebars while fog lights perch on the engine guards.
Imperfections include a crack in the windscreen and a deep scratch
in the fairing, along with some minor wear on the edge of the seat.
There is evidence of use on the undercarriage.
Functionality
Thumb controls are constructed of varying, brightly colored plastic
switches on each handlebar, and foam rubber grips are utilized.
Gauges include a speedometer and tachometer flanking indicator
lights while a clock and fuel gauge are embedded in the
fairing.
Drivetrain
On board is a 797cc boxer 2 engine, rated at 50 horsepower and
fueled by dual 1-barrel Bing carburetors. It is backed by a 5-speed
manual that drives the rear wheel via shaft drive. Disc brakes are
utilized on the 21-inch front wheel and drum brakes on the 17-inch
rear. Suspension consists of Marzocchi telescopic forks in front
and a paralever swingarm with single shock absorber in back and on
the right side.
According to those in the know, R80's are popular because they're
easy to maintain and parts are available, and they can be easily
modified. This one is in excellent condition and its compact size
means you can fit it next to your other bikes!
