"Many little niceties that Chevrolet traditionally comes up with
every year are also included with Malibu. New ones for '68 include
crank operated ventipanes, side marker lights and an ignition alarm
system. Malibus are very big on basics, too. Wide stance
roadability, of course. A colorful selection of 15 contemporary
Magic Mirror finishes to enhance Chevelle's exciting new looks."
From the 1968 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle convertible with
a title verified 129,868 actual miles. This garage kept gleaming
red on white car is clean and straight and ready for some good
clean fun in the sun!
Exterior
They say shoes make the man and indeed, the 15-inch Cragar SS
wheels here with staggered size tires and letters out change the
profile of the car from the somewhat pedestrian commuter car in the
sales catalog to something a bit more muscular and flashy. It
doesn't hurt either that the Matador Red paint now presents in two
stage goodness, enhanced by a white pinstripe that picks up on the
white canvas soft top. Latch panel trim includes a black band that
falls in line with the narrow tail lights, all underscored by a
contouring chrome bumper. Up front, a bright package includes the
headlight bezels and grated grille along with another mirror-like
bumper. In general, the paint and trim are excellent. Imperfections
include some chips, paint inclusions, cracking at the decklid
filler panel, a few scratches, paint runs, surface rust in lieu of
paint on the sill, and a single bubble on the front fender.
Interior
White vinyl door panels are matched in condition by the front
bucket seats and the rear bench and by that we mean very nice! A
three spoke steering wheel shares the column with a tachometer and
fronts the two square gauges framed in textured black plastic and
painted silver trim in good condition. The center stack includes
the A/C lever panel, an AM/FM/Cassette radio, and an added triple
gauge pack for the essential information. In the center console,
you'll find a horseshoe shifter and green tinged indicator panel
over black carpet and embroidered mats. The trunk's vinyl plaid mat
shows some use and covers the clean stamped steel floor.
Drivetrain
We have some bling under the hood where polished valve cover with
red highlights flank a polished Edelbrock intake manifold. The
350ci V8 also has an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, headers, and is
bolted to a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission routing power to
the 12 bolt rear with 2.73 gears. Power steering, power brakes, and
A/C are also onboard.
Undercarriage
The underside is clean and structurally sound and features dual
exhaust into FlowMaster mufflers and coil springs at both ends with
a 4 link in back. Brakes are split between power disc up front and
power drum in back.
Drive-Ability
This well sorted car does everything well and sounds great doing
it. Onlookers confirm; it looks good on the test loop too! We have
no complaints here as all functions work as they should and we
can't wait to hand over the keys to the next custodian! While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Like we said, good, clean fun! Plus functionality. All wrapped up
in a classic Chevelle that will never stop being cool looking. This
is a very nice example that checks all the boxes for a great
acquisition.
