The RX-7 was introduced in 1978 as a two-seater coupé with a rear hatchback. The second-generation RX-7 was offered with optional 2+2 seating in some markets as well as in a convertible. It was heavily influenced by the Porsche 944 which is evident by its sophisticated design and sleek aerodynamics. The 1986 model is noted for its award-winning handling and debuted the Dynamic Tracking Suspension System (DTSS) which earned it Motor Trend’s 1986 Import Car of the Year. This particular example was parked many years ago as it was in need of engine work. It had never been driven in the winter and was completely rust-free when the current owner stumbled upon it. The current owner is an accomplished mechanic and swapped the original drivetrain with a 3.6 LFX V6 and a 6-speed manual both from the same 2013 Camaro. The engine is performance modified and is currently producing in excess of 350hp. The rear end is an 8.8” Ford with 3.73 gears. Other mods include the fully adjustable coil over shocks on all 4 corners, polyurethane suspension bushings, a larger front sway bar, oversized front brakes with Hawk pads, manual steering, a custom roll bar, a rear strut brace and a quick-release Momo steering wheel. It has E-85 sensors and a tune that runs best on E-85 but it still runs fine on 87 octane. It sits on MSW rims wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 225-40-18 tires with tons of tread. The interior shows signs of its age and the paint is far from perfect. This is not a show car it is a driver/track day car as you can see by the video we shared. It is estimated that over $15K was spent on parts to make this sweet little hatchback what you currently see and that did not include the original price of the car or the hundreds of hours labor involved in the build. The owner is ready for a new project and we have priced it to move as quick as it goes so if you like what you see time is of the essence!
