For auction, a 1970 Chevrolet Corvette convertible with a title
verified 95,317 actual miles. This car has its numbers matching
Muncie M20 and young tires that are 255/60R15's with a mid 2022
date code.
Exterior
Two stage Cranberry Red paint adorns this American sports car and
who doesn't have "red convertible Corvette" on their bingo card or
wish list? The classic Coke bottle styling sends fenders curving
towards the sky while the nose down attitude and covered headlights
is a dead ringer for an actual seagoing stingray. The slight uplift
to the integrated spoiler represents the barbed stinger and like
the fish, is graceful and mean looking at the same time. Fender
vents are side gills and a white canvas top provides some visual
contrast. Imperfections here include some haze to the plastic rear
window, the crossed flag emblem up front is uncrossed, numerous
chips and scratches throughout, an unoccupied antennae hole, some
dullness to the metalwork, and panel gap issues.
Interior
The Saddle interior begins with simple and clean plastic and vinyl
door panels and the color continues onto the tall bucket seats also
in decent shape. A leather wrapped steering wheel fronts twin
gauges up front embedded in saddle plastic and the center stack is
the now familiar aircraft like configuration of five gauges under a
pair of vent, slightly askew, and above an AM/FM radio and
futuristic light panel. The chrome ball shifter resides in a
plastic trim plate with the requisite shift diagram and engine stat
plate, all with some slight patina that some deep detailing might
remedy. Tan loop carpet fills the floor nicely and is also found in
the cargo area where it shows some usage and houses some loose, box
speakers.
Drivetrain
Pivoting the hood forward leads to a 350ci V8 used between 1969 and
1979 with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor over an Edelbrock intake
manifold. Bolted on back is the numbers matching Muncie M20 4-speed
manual transmission that routes power to the rear axle with 3.36
gears and Positraction, stamped exactly 56 years ago! Power brakes
and power steering are on board.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions prevail on a mostly clean underside with
some light surface rust and traces of oil film. The dual exhaust
travels through Dynomax mufflers, then almost immediately finds
rectangular exhaust tips. Power disc brakes are found on all four
wheels and fully independent suspension consists of coil springs in
front and a transverse leaf spring in back.
Drive-Ability
The car runs, drives, stops, and turns well. That's the good news.
The following items were found to be inoperable: wipers, radio,
horn, reverse lights, brake lights, and air conditioning. The back
of the convertible top does not latch as the latches are missing
and the right side of the top cover does not latch. Finally, the
hood has a difficult time staying latched. Beyond these things, all
functions operate as expected. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
We wonder if anyone's tracked the sale of red Corvettes since
Prince's debut of his song in 1983. But Prince didn't make red
Corvettes famous and desirable, the car did that on its own! Here's
a nice example of a drop top '70 that could easily be brought to
the next level with some TLC.
