Here is a rare opportunity to purchase a fantastic early (63-R2262) 1963 Studebaker Avanti. This Model R1, 4-Speed entered production on 11/29/62 and left the factory on January 31, 1963 and has been in private collections for the past 30 years. It has undergone extensive mechanical restorations and upgrades over the last 5 years and is going to become available for sale now that the New England roads are becoming clean enough to take this car out again.
Under the hood is a fresh, totally rebuilt and dyno tested, numbers matching (R1725) 289cuin V8 by Golen Engine of Hudson, NH (https://golenengineservice.com/). The alternator and water pump are new as is the fuel pump, power steering pump and control valves. The PS hoses and seats are also new. The radiator was restored and pressure tested by Lowell Radiator of Lowell, MA. The 4-bbl Carter carburetor was restored by Hobbs Carburetor of Windham, NH, Exhaust flows out in a new stainless dual exhaust setup by Silvertone Exhaust Systems of Onterio, CN. The engine bay is nicely detailed and shows correctly per the Avanti Authenticity Manuals right down to the restored wiper motor and window washer bag.
The car rides on a perfectly solid frame as are the infamous “Hog Troughs”. The front suspension is tight and rides on new shocks. The front brakes are upgraded with a Turner Brake conversion (turnerbrake.com). The power brake booster performs as designed and has been converted to a dual master cylinder set up. The rear brakes, backing plates, drums, adjusters, and brake cylinders have all been restored/replaced as have some brake lines as needed including the rear brake line hose.
The power is transferred through a new clutch to the original 4-speed syncro-mesh transmission. The Twin Traction rear end has just been flushed, inspected, filled and resealed last season. The original Avanti factory wheels have been restored and run on a new set of Coker American Classic white wall radials. The original factory wheel covers have been perfectly restored. Even the spare tire is new and show worthy with all its accessories.
The body has been repainted in its original Avanti Gold and shows like the day it left the factory. The interior is original but shows beautifully with only some minor defects on the driver’ seat. The carpets have been replaced and also sport a new set of embroidered front carpet mats. The dash and steering wheel are crack free and look pristine. With the exception of the clock, the instruments are all functional including the AM radio with optional rear speaker.
Copies of all the original factory documents are available to the buyer, which include: Factory Production Order, Drive Away Shipper, and all of the factory production build sheets. Even the IBM warranty punch card indicating the name of the first buyer. A wonderful provenance and history ready to be passed on.
