"In 1978, Chrysler introduced the Dodge Magnum XE and XS, a pair of
hardtop coupes with squarish styling. It was most likely intended
to replace the 1978 Charger SE, a vehicle which, though nice
enough, did not have the temperament of the 340, 440, and Hemi
powered predecessors. The 1978 Charger was a Dodge version of the
Chrysler Cordoba, and its front clip, (grille, headlights, and
bumpers), was nearly identical to the early Cordobas. The Magnum's
appearance was, save mainly for its rectangular themed front clip,
identical to the Charger SE. The Magnum's brief life ended in 1979,
when it was replaced by the Mirada." Dodgeforum.com
For consignment, a 1978 Dodge Magnum XE 2 door hardtop with a title
verified 20,473 actual miles. Talk about a time capsule! Nearly
48,000 Magnum XE's were produced in 1978 and this green hardtop is
an exemplary survivor that retains its numbers matching
transmission.
Exterior
While the Mint Green Metallic paint is a sign of the times, so too
is the boxy profile interspersed with stamped steel body lines on
the side that give it character and a certain aerodynamic flair to
the otherwise slab sides, and a lot of cars had this in the 70's.
That also had that half vinyl roof which waterfalls onto the
C-pillar with contrasting material and color and a touch of class
around the fixed quarter window. Square, sectioned tail lights were
fairly standard across the line, but the covered headlights make
this B-body stand out amongst pedestrian commuters. The use of
etched lines that continue over the marker lights are wildly unique
and maybe even reduced the drag coefficient! 15-inch wheels have
full covers with red tips at the end of a turbine design, here
wrapped in white wall 205/75R15 tires. Imperfections include chips,
edgewear, various scratches, scuffs, cracks in a headlight cover, a
stain in the vinyl top, discoloration of the bumper filler, dings
in the wheel opening trim, and surface rust on lower panels and
rockers.
Interior
Green vinyl door panels with faux wood trim and carpeted lowers
greet you upon opening and aside from a repair made to the pull,
present in nice condition. On to the bucket seats which are tall
and well padded with elongated headrests. There's some chipping
vinyl on the driver's seat but the rest, including the back, are in
very nice shape. That padded vinyl makes its way to the steering
wheel spoke showing a touch of patina and the rim is cracked in
several places. Up front, it's the standard simulated wood
treatment around the gauges and switchgear which combine sportiness
with luxury and continues across to the passenger area where vents,
a clock, and the Magnum name are featured. There's a center console
combining green plastic, wood, and metal, over thick green carpet.
We note the armrest shows a good deal of patina and the headliner
has some sag but is intact. Meanwhile, the trunk is finished in
gray panels and carpet and presents cleanly.
Drivetrain
On board is a numbers matching 360ci V8 and a 4-barrel carburetor
and 'lean burn' system, an early computer controlled ignition
system meant to reduce emissions. Behind the engine, the numbers
matchingA904 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to an 8
" rear axle. Power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning is
on board.
Undercarriage
The soot colored undercarriage includes a clean single exhaust
system running through a stock style muffler. Power brakes are on
front and power drums in back while suspension consists of torsion
bars in front and leaf springs in back. We do note some surface
rust on the door bottoms.
Drive-Ability
It's like stepping back to 1978 in the Dodge B-body and its
accommodations. The 360 starts up and gets us on our way, around
the test loop, and performing well, leaving us with no complaints.
It has decent power and straight tracking and everything works with
the exception of the air conditioning. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
