The last Ford Thunderbird ever built rolled off the production line
on July 1, 2005, exactly 50 years after the nameplate that defined
American personal luxury debuted in 1955. Ford built only 9,295
Thunderbirds in that final year across all colors and
configurations, making every 2005 example a piece of a closed
chapter in American automotive history. Every 2005 model carries
the 50th Anniversary badge, and this one is finished in Bronze
Clearcoat Metallic with a newer black convertible top, light sand
leather inside, and the original window sticker showing a sticker
price of $42,865. Two owners, clean Carfax, and everything exactly
as it should be.
Under the hood is the 3.9 liter V8 backed by a five speed
automatic. The platform and engine were shared with the Lincoln LS
and Jaguar S-Type, giving the Thunderbird a foundation that was
considerably more sophisticated than most buyers at the time
realized. It pulls smoothly and quietly, and settles into a
relaxed, unhurried cruising character that is exactly what a car
like this was designed around. The 17 inch seven-spoke chrome
aluminum wheels are a sharp finishing touch that suit the Bronze
paint well.
Inside, the light sand leather interior is clean and well kept. The
Thunderbird's cabin was always more about comfort and elegance than
performance, and this one delivers on both. The convertible top is
newer and operates the way it should, giving you open-air cruising
whenever the mood strikes.
Ford originally designed the 2005 Thunderbird as a tribute to the
original 1955 model that sparked a cultural phenomenon. The first
Thunderbird outsold the Chevrolet Corvette two to one in its debut
year, and while Chevrolet eventually steered the Corvette toward
the racetrack, Ford kept the Thunderbird exactly where it always
belonged, on the boulevard, in the sunshine, with the top down.
This 2005 example is the final expression of that philosophy, built
in the last year, in a low-volume color, with the documentation to
back it all up.
