The 2006 Monte Carlo SS is one of the most unusual American
performance cars ever built, and that is meant as a compliment.
This was the first time General Motors had ever put a Generation IV
small-block V8 into a front-wheel-drive car, and it marked the
return of V8 power to the SS trim after a 30-year absence.
Chevrolet built the SS around NASCAR inspiration, gave it a large,
angular two-door body, and dropped a proper V8 under the hood to
back up the badges. The Monte Carlo name disappeared entirely after
2007, making this one of the last two years of a nameplate that had
been part of Chevrolet's lineup since 1970. This example has been
built considerably beyond stock, finished in black and red with a
blacked-out hood, bumper, and rear deck lid, and an aftermarket
spoiler kit that gives it an aggressive presence that backs up what
is happening under the hood.
Under the hood the 5.3 liter Vortec V8 has been turbocharged and
tuned by HP Tuners to a setup capable of 800 horsepower. Methanol
injection has been integrated through the washer fluid pump and
tank, and the car sits on coilovers that keep it planted and
controlled under hard use. A boost gauge and oil pressure gauge by
Bosch give you a real-time read on everything happening under load.
This is not a car that was built to look fast. It was built to be
fast, and the numbers support that.
Inside, the grey cloth interior is clean and functional. A Pioneer
touchscreen and audio system, sunroof, and leather-wrapped steering
wheel round out a cabin that is comfortable and well equipped for a
car built with this level of performance in mind.
The front-wheel-drive V8 combination is not conventional, and that
is exactly what makes these cars interesting. The Monte Carlo SS
occupies a strange and specific corner of American automotive
history, a big two-door coupe with a NASCAR nameplate, a genuine
V8, and a platform nobody else was brave enough to try. This one
has been built to a level that makes the unconventional setup
genuinely compelling.
