"An excellent example of the advanced streamline design for 1937.
Larger, more accessible luggage space carries a spare tire, and is
reached from the rear through a large door. Front seat cushion is
full width sedan type, seating three. Seat back is divided, either
side tilting forward. Fine upholstery, fashionably tailored, with
new wide piping. Pillar lights. Arm rests. Ash tray in rear
compartment. This car is also available without DeLuxe
appointments. " From the New Ford V-8 Cars for 1937 sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1937 Ford Deluxe Club coupe with a title
verified 72,795 actual miles although the miles may be higher as
the odometer is inoperable. We'll call this one a project car with
great bones, presenting in very original condition and showing some
of its 89 years of existence.
Exterior
Ford boasted their new streamline design and in 1937, that meant a
slightly canted V-shaped grille, wide flowing fenders, and a
rounded roof that allowed the air to spill off the back. Black
paint covers this car augmented with a light blue pinstripe runs
the shoulder line and dips with the descension of the tail. Out
back, a large trunk lid is hinged on top, flanked by small round
tail lights and topped by a divided rear window. In profile, the
cabin is tall and finds its foundation in the wide running board,
while metal trim on the engine cover vents adds forward leaning
visual interest to the front. Teardrop headlights ride close to the
grille and allow the fenders to articulate wide over the 15-inch
wheels with V8 center caps and white wall tires. Imperfections
abound and include crazing and cracking on the hood, scratches,
scuffs and chips throughout, orange peel, evidence of filler,
cracked paint throughout, rubber peeling or cracked on the running
boards along with surface rust,
Interior
Mohair panels dress the door with original hardware and deco
ornamentation on the crown and both show some age. The same
material covers the bench seat, which is in decent condition, and
the rear bench and side walls which look immaculate. Chestnut brown
is the palette up front beginning on the rim and center cap of the
banjo steering wheel and around the ivory gauges on the dashboard
and ivory knobs in the center. A tall shifter rises from a floor
covered with greenish thick pile carpet which of course, is not
original, but the mohair headliner seems to be and is in great
shape with some typical loose spots. The trunk is barren and houses
a spare tire.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, an unrestored 221ci flathead V8, rated at 85
horsepower and fueled by a 2-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a
3-speed manual that routes power to the rear axle with 3.76 gears.
The car still runs on a 6 volt system.
Undercarriage
Solid underpinnings are marred only by some typical surface rust
and some residual oil on both the pan and the rear differential.
Componentry includes a single exhaust through a stock style
muffler, drum brakes on all four wheels, and transverse leaf
springs front and rear.
Drive-Ability
This geriatric survivor runs, but runs poorly and the steering is a
bit sloppy. Be that as it may, we were still able to test
functionality and in that realm, we note the radio, heater blower,
odometer, trip odometer, wipers, headlights, and taillights are not
working. The remaining functions do. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
You can see what we mean here. There are some excellent qualities
to this car but also some things that are going to need attention.
This presents as a survivor and is a long way from the crusher.
Who's ready to drive this 89 year old to the fountain of youth?
