Cruisin Classics is pleased to present to you this 1997 Ford
Mustang SVT Cobra convertible. This car is one of only 840
triple-black leather interior convertible Cobras produced in 1997
and like all the others, it features a modular V-8 hand-built by a
pair of SVT technicians. This Cobra was the top-tier Mustang of
it's day with a price tag of $28K back in '97 - over $58K in
today's dollars! The CarFax for this Mustang shows four owners and
an accident back in 2000 with functional damage (meaning the car
was still drivable). This Cobra comes to us today dressed in it's
factory black paint that still has a nice shine. Though the paint
is glossy, there are small imperfections from having been driven
(mostly rock chips on the front end and hood) that put it in the
driver-quality category. Up front there's a swooping hood with
functional air scoops, a gleaming Cobra badge in the grille area,
and crystal-clear headlamp glass. The entire body is black,
including the dual side mirrors, door handles, front and rear
bumper covers, and rocker cladding. Chrome Cobra fender badges
really pop aginst the black sides. The black power convertible top
is in good condition with only minimal imperfections (no holes or
tears) and it works as it should. Adding to the sporty look of this
Pony are side scoops on the rear quarters and a distinctive rear
spoiler. Perfectly complementing the side view are a set of 18"
chrome 5-spoke wheels with Cobra logo centercaps, all wrapped in
Toyo Proxes tires. Around back you'll find "SVT Cobra" and "Ford"
badging on the decklid, chrome vinyl "COBRA" lettering on the rear
bumper guard, and a set of polished exhaust tips that emit a nice
growl. We did note during our inspection that while the two factory
key fobs work as they should, both master keys only work in the
passenger door and the ignition (not the drivers door or
trunk).
Lift the hood to reveal a clean stock engine bay with a 4.6 liter
aluminum block V-8 at the center. There is a decal on the left
valve cover that's signed by the two SVT techs who built the engine
- very cool. The hearty V-8 is factory-rated at 305hp and 300 lb/ft
of torque with 0-60 acceleration in only 5.5 seconds and a 14
second quarter-mile time - this Pony knows how to run! Backing up
that powerplant is a Borg-Warner T45 5-speed manual transmission
that gives the driver total control of the driving experience.
Glance around and you'll see that this Mustang is outfitted with
power steering, 4-wheel power disc brakes, and factory A/C with a
parallel-flow condenser exclusive to the SVT Cobra.
When you open the driver's door you're greeted by a well-kept
all-black interior that's loaded with creature comforts. The door
panels offer power locks, windows, and mirrors as well as speakers
and storage slots. The seats are factory black leather, very
comfortable, and they're in good condition with no notable
demerits. The drivers seat is power/manual and the passenger seat
is manual. Between the front buckets is a center console that's
home to an armrest/storage box with fold-out cupholder, switches
for the fog lights and the convertible top, an emergency brake
lever, and a short-throw shifter with a polished aluminum pattern
knob for the 5-speed. Ahead of the driver is a leather-wrapped
steering wheel on a tilt column with touch-controls for cruise
control. The turn signal stalk does double-duty and offers controls
for intermittent wipers. The wheel perfectly frames a gauge cluster
with a 160mph speedometer, 8K tachometer, and gauges for fuel,
temp, battery, and oil pressure. The odometer currently reads
71,657 miles. Atop the center of the dash is a digital clock that
sits above simplistic HVAC controls that provide cold A/C and hot
heat with a strong fan on demand. The factory stereo has been
replaced with a Sony CDX-M800 AM/FM/CD player with remote. The
stereo works, but it only plays through a JBL subwoofer box in the
trunk, not the factory speakers (the subwoofer sounds very muffled
and may be "blown", and the external antenna is not present).
Inside the glovebox you'll find the original owners manual for the
car. Back in the trunk with the subwoofer is a factory spare and
jack.
If you're looking for a fun drop-top with amenities and power to
spare, this SVT Cobra is just the ticket! This ride offers a
driver-focused experience that will put a smile on your face every
time you hit the accelerator and row through the gears! The sun is
out and there's no better way to enjoy it than cruising around in a
top-of-the-line Mustang with the top down! Give our friendly staff
a call today and make this black beauty your own!
