BMW has built fast sedans for decades, but the M5 CS is in a
different category entirely. When it launched, BMW called it the
fastest production car they had ever built, and they backed that up
with numbers that are hard to argue with. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo
V8 produces 627 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, enough to
get to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds. BMW also stripped 230
pounds out of it compared to the already serious M5 Competition
through extensive use of carbon fiber throughout the body, hood,
roof, and interior. The result is a car that weighs less, handles
sharper, and stops harder than anything else wearing an M badge.
Only 1,000 were ever built for the entire world. This one is
finished in Frozen Deep Green Metallic, one of only 300 ever
produced in that color, with bronze gold accents on the grille,
wheels, and trim that make it look like nothing else on the
road.
Under the hood that twin-turbo V8 sends power to all four wheels
through an eight speed automatic with carbon fiber paddle shifters.
The CS took a development lap around the Nrburgring Nordschleife
and posted a time of 7 minutes and 29.57 seconds, faster than the
M8 Competition, the Audi R8 Plus, and the Pagani Zonda F. When a
four-door family sedan is embarrassing supercars on the most
demanding race circuit in the world, the point has been made. BMW
put the layout of the Nrburgring embossed directly into the
headrests of the carbon bucket seats as a permanent reminder of
what this car was built to do.
Inside, the carbon fiber bucket seats are up front and rear, all
with the Nrburgring embossed into the headrests. The CS trim
brings more carbon fiber throughout the cabin than any other M5
variant, and it shows in every surface and every detail. Carbon
paddle shifters, M Performance floor mats, and bronze accents carry
the exterior theme all the way through the interior.
The CS designation at BMW has always signified the absolute top of
the performance hierarchy, a limited production, no-compromise
version of the car it is based on reserved for buyers who want
everything the engineers had left to give. With 1,000 built total
and only 300 in this color, this example sits at the very top of
that pyramid. One of the most capable four-door cars ever produced,
in one of the rarest configurations it was offered in.
