The C5 Corvette changed everything when it arrived in 1997, and
1998 brought the addition that completed the lineup. This was the
first year the C5 was offered as a convertible, and the response
was immediate. Motor Trend awarded both the coupe and convertible
their Car of the Year for 1998, and the 1998 C5 was also chosen as
the official pace car for the Indianapolis 500, the fourth time in
Corvette history the honor had been given to the car. This example
is finished in black over black leather, a combination that suits
the clean, low body of the C5 perfectly, and it has been updated
with LED lights, an aftermarket infotainment system, and an
aftermarket exhaust that gives it a stronger voice than it left the
factory with.
Under the hood is the 5.7 liter LS1 V8 backed by a four speed
automatic. The LS1 produces 345 horsepower and was the foundation
of what became one of the most celebrated engine families in
American automotive history. It pulls strong, revs freely, and
sounds considerably better with the aftermarket exhaust behind it.
The C5 also achieved something that seemed almost impossible at the
time: it hit 60 miles per hour in just over five seconds while
still returning fuel economy numbers that kept it below the federal
gas guzzler threshold. That combination of performance and
efficiency was essentially unmatched in its class.
Inside, the black leather cabin is clean and well kept. The
aftermarket infotainment system brings a modern connectivity
upgrade without altering the overall character of the interior. C7
wheels and LED lights round out a car that has been thoughtfully
maintained and improved over the years, and a substantial
collection of service receipts comes with it to document exactly
how it has been cared for.
The C5 was the last generation of Corvette to wear pop up
headlights, a feature that had been part of the car's identity for
decades. When the C6 arrived with fixed headlights in 2005, that
chapter quietly closed. A black 1998 convertible with LED lighting,
service history, and the right upgrades in the right places is
exactly the kind of C5 that buyers are paying attention to as this
generation settles into collectible territory.
