"Keen to test the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, (pronounced
'four-by-E'), I was piloting, and to tempt fate a bit, I dropped
the tire pressure down to 15 PSI, pulled the transfer case lever
down from all wheel drive, (yes, it has AWD), into 4 Low, and
throttled forward. Having depleted the battery charge earlier, the
4xe was in Hybrid mode, which utilized both the gas engine and the
electric motor generator for forward propulsion." Overlandexpo.com,
2021
For consignment, a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe with a
title verified 50,234 actual miles. The onboard batteries charge
through the use of the gas engine but this example comes with a 110
hook up and a home kit for quick charge, as well as a transferable
3 year extended warranty.
Exterior
If you're going to hit the trail, you might as well let it show,
and show it will with the Bright White Clearcoat paint that adorns
this big rig. It covers the solid roof that frames a black canvas
top, the fenders, and the iconic Jeep grille up front, but the
bumpers stand out with big black proportions and blue tow hooks.
There's other blue as well, to denote this Jeep's hybrid status,
with an offset graphic on the hood, blue framing on the Rubicon
lettering, inside the Trail Rated badge, and on the Wrangler fender
decals. The 17-inch wheels hold LT285/70R17's with an early 2021
date code. Imperfections are few and include some scuffs and
several chips.
Interior
Robust black plastic door panels present cleanly and include
stitched and padded armrests, storage nets, and brushed nickel door
handles and all four doors present cleanly. Dark Saddle leather
bucket seats occupy the front with Rubicon stitched in white and
while the saddle leather makes it to the back row, the stitching
does not but features retractable headrests and all the seats are
in nice shape. Big proportions are found in the thick steering
wheels, switchgear, and shifter of the instrument cluster, center
stack, and center console. An AM/FM/CD player with Uconnect, XM
capability, 4G hotspot, CarPlay/Android, and Bluetooth make this
utility vehicle with a storied heritage leap into the 21st century.
Stitched padding and a grab handle is afforded to the passenger and
a center screen controls many of the interior functions. The rear
cargo area is replete with tie downs and plenty of carpeted storage
space.
Drivetrain
Our dusty engine bay is home to a 2.0 liter DOHC turbo inline 4
cylinder and it works with dual electric motors to create a
combined 375 horsepower. That's mated to an 8-speed automatic
transmission with power landing at Dana 44 TruLok axles at both
ends, each with 4.10 gears.
Undercarriage
Some trail dirt still clings to the underside but overall, we have
clean and structurally sound conditions. The single exhaust still
travels through the original muffler and four wheel power disc
brakes are on board. There's a lift kit on the suspension which is
a 4 link with coil springs at both ends.
Drive-Ability
No complaints here as the big tires and high ride roll over our
blacktop with ease and there's plenty of usable power underfoot.
The dash has more buttons than an arcade and the screen has more
functions than your phone, but it's all arranged in a logical,
intuitive design. Better yet, everything works as intended and it's
off to the truck room for this big white rig. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
Now you can eat your cake and have it too! 4x4's are not known for
great gas mileage, but the window sticker on this model claimed
49mpg when electric and gas were used together. Now you can rip
through nature, (on the trails, of course), and save the planet at
the same time!
