The sixth generation Mustang brought the car into a new era. Ford
replaced the old live rear axle with an independent rear suspension
for the first time in the model's history, widened the stance,
lowered the roofline, and gave it a design that traced its roots
directly back to the original 1965 fastback while standing on its
own as a modern performance car. This one is finished in Triple
Yellow Tri-Coat with a black power convertible top, ebony black 19
inch wheels, and a black leather interior with yellow stitching
that carries the theme all the way through. It is a color
combination that makes no apologies and makes an impression
everywhere it goes.
Under the hood is the 5.0 liter Coyote V8 producing 435 horsepower
and backed by a six speed automatic with paddle shifters. The
Coyote is one of the best naturally aspirated V8 engines Ford has
ever built, and in convertible form it sounds even better with
nothing between you and the exhaust note. Blind spot information
system, automatic dual climate control, interior ambient lighting,
and the SYNC 8 inch touchscreen were all part of the 2016 update
that brought the Mustang's technology fully in line with what
buyers expected from a modern performance car.
Inside, the black leather cabin is well appointed with heated and
cooled seats, power and memory seats, steering wheel controls, and
the Shaker Pro audio system, which is the premium 12-speaker setup
that fills the cabin with real sound whether the top is up or
down.
The 2016 GT has a detail that is unique to this model year only.
The turn signals on GT models were integrated directly into the
hood vents, a feature that appeared for one year and was never
repeated on any other S550. It is a small thing, but enthusiasts
notice it. What they will also notice is the radiator cowl cover on
this car, which has been signed by Gale Halderman, the Ford
designer who drew the original 1965 Mustang. Halderman was 29 years
old when he sketched the lines that became one of the most iconic
cars in American history. Having his signature on any Mustang is
special. Having it on a Triple Yellow convertible GT is something
else entirely.
