For auction is a 1966 Mercury Comet 202 2 door sedan showing 61,397
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car runs and drives
well, making a 120 mile drive to the mall, was owned by one family
until 2024, and recently passedstate inspection. To get her back
road worthy the car has been treated to a tune up, fresh oil
change, tires, all new brakes, shoes, wheel cylinders, lines,
hoses, and a new master cylinder.
Exterior
The fantastic 60's design includes stacked headlights flanking a
slim double grille and understated tail lights that fit a narrow
rear panel over the chrome bumper. The Cardinal Red paint has seen
better days, even as it spills over a mostly straight body. Patchy
blotches, fading, and oxidation afflict most of it with more severe
issues around the fuel filler that includes a split in the metal
courtesy of a Penn Dotfront end loader bucket back in 1981. There
are areas with filler and some substantial rust on the left rear
wheel opening and blistering in other areas. The Polar White top
retains some sheen but has spots of surface rust and bubbling
around the C-pillar. 14-inch wheels are painted red and retain
their dog dish hubcaps while being wrapped in 205/60R14's with a
late 2022 date code.
Interior
If the door panels are a preview of things to come on the inside,
our buyer will be very happy as they are presented as fresh. The
split bench shows a bit more originality and a touch of age but
still more than acceptable in its red vinyl and striped cloth
pattern, mirrored by the very nice rear bench. A red steering wheel
and black faced instrument cluster show slight patina but are
fantastically simple and original along with the vent panel and AM
radio in the red mid panel. As often the case, the dash pad tells
the tale of sun exposure and is showing a few cracks. Our black
carpet below is decent and the red headliner above is exceptional,
while the trunk shows areas of rust through and general age.
Drivetrain
A bright blue air filter cover tops a driver quality 200ci inline 6
cylinder. Recent work includes a new 1-barrel carburetor, new
points, coil, cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. It's rated at 120
horsepower and is mated to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that
routes power to the Ford 8" in back with 2.80 gears.
Undercarriage
Heavy oxidation, plenty of surface rust, and oil on the pan and
rear differential is present. A single exhaust finds its way to a
stock style muffler that has a gaping hole, while drum brakes
occupy the front and rear. Those brakes are newer and include new
lines, hoses, drums, wheels cylinders and master cylinder.
Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in
the rear.
Drive-Ability
That car runs and drives well and even made the 120 mile trip to
the mall on its own! We add about mile to it on the test loop
where it performs well and all functions operate. We note a
pulsating brake pedal due to a warped drum. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If you're looking for the ideal classic car project that doesn't
have to be built from the ground up, this Comet just might be the
best bet in the galaxy!
