Cruisin Classics is excited to present to you today this rare,
low-mileage 1987 Dodge Shelby Charger GLHS. If you haven't seen one
of these before, it's because only 1,000 of them were made back in
'87 and they don't come available very often. These cars were all
black, limited production, high performance hatchbacks that
represent the pinnacle of the L-body platform. Carroll Shelby
purchased the final 1,000 Dodge Chargers produced and modified them
at his Whittier California plant. The engines were upgraded from a
Chrysler Tturbo 1 engine to an intercooled version of the Turbo II
engine with a special 2-piece intake system, a relocated radiator
(to make room for the intercooler), larger injectors and throttle
body, and a Shelby-tuned ECM. These light-weight (2,500 lb) Shelby
Chargers were rated at 175hp and 175 lb/ft of torque - plenty quick
enough to earn their "GLHS" moniker, which is said to mean "Goes
Like Hell S'More". Making this car even cooler is the number on the
odometer - a mere 37,422 actual miles! Let's take a deeper dive
into this blast from the past... This Charger comes to us with a
slick coat of black paint with a nice shine and only few minimal
imperfections. The hood features louvered vents on the passenger
side and a power-bulge with "Intercooled" decals on the driver's
side. The molded urethane front fascia features a blacked out
Pentastar at the top, rectangular bucketed headlights, an upper and
lower grille, a bumper cover, and an aero spoiler. Silver stripe
decals in good condition wrap around the car at knee height. The
windshield has a "Shelby" decal at the top and you'll find other
"Shelby" decals on the rockers, just behind the front wheels. The
dual side mirrors are both body-color and so are the door handle
inserts and door edge guards. The c-pillar sail-panels sport faux
vents and GLHS graphics. Take a look up on the roof and find a
tinted, removable, pop-up sunroof. This Charger sits atop a set of
custom Shelby-manufactured Centurion II wheels all wrapped in
Hercules G3000V tires. Around back is a large flat square hatchback
with a spoiler at the bottom. The spoiler is outfitted with a third
brake light and accented with a black Pentastar and
"Shelby"&"GLHS" decals. Below is a black urethane rear bumper
cover and a set of twin exhaust tips.
Under the light-weight hood is a very clean engine bay that's home
to a 2.2 litre inline 4-cylinder Turbo II engine topped off with a
black finned "Shelby" valve cover. This peppy engine is mated up to
a 5-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear end. The
impressive power-to-weight ratio of this car allows it to
accelerate 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds and cover a quarter mile in
the mid-14 second range - pretty darn quick for a car of this era!
While under the hood, you'll also see that this ride comes equipped
with factory A/C, power steering, and power front disc and rear
drum brakes. Out on the road, this car is an absolute blast to
drive - agile, responsive, and fast enough to throw you back in
your seat when the turbo kicks in!
The two-tone grey interior of this Charger is still outfitted the
way it left the Shelby factory and it's still in very good
condition. The door panels are a blend of grey vinyl, fabric, and
carpet with a bright trim strip. Windows are crank-operated and
there's an interior toggle for the driver's mirror. Grey factory
carpet with carpeted Shelby logo floormats welcomes you inside for
a cruise. The two-tone grey vinyl and fabric bolstered bucket seats
are in excellent condition and they feature "CS" logos embroidered
on the headrest area. The rear bench seat is in similarly good
condition and also has the "CS" logos. We did note that the rear
side panels and C-pillar covers are discolored from age. Betwen the
front seats is an emergency brake handle and a leather-wrapped
shifter for the 5-speed manual. The driver is treated to a uniquely
styled leather-wrapped 4-spoke steering wheel on a stationary
column (horn inop.). The wheel frames a trio of round gauges that
offer a tachometer & fuel gauge, speedometer (changed to 125mph by
Shelby), and a combo gauge with temp, oil, and battery. Within
convenient reach of the driver there's a light switch, HVAC
controls that offer cold AC and hot heat with a strong fan, a hatch
release, a rear defrost switch, intermittent wipers, and a Chrysler
AM/FM/cassette stereo that plays through speakers in the dash and
doors (it does crackle when adjusting the volume). Also in the dash
is an ashtray, lighter, map light, storage slot with cupholders,
and a glovebox. Ahead of the passenger on the dash is a Shelby
Automotive numbered dash badge that shows this is car number 223 of
1,000. Take a quick look upward to find a tight grey felt headliner
and the aforementioned sunroof. Around back in the hatchback
there's a vinyl bag for storing the sunroof glass along with
hold-down straps. The rear seat folds down, creating a great deal
of cargo room. We did note that the hydraulic struts no longer hold
the weight of the hatchback. Included with the car is an original
Shelby Service Manual.
With only 1,000 of these Shelby GLHS's produced almost 40 years
ago, they will only become more rare and valuable with time -
especially low-mileage examples in good condition like this one! It
would be a great piece for a collection, but it can also be driven
and enjoyed. Don't miss this opportunity and let this Mopar
hot-hatch pass you by, give our friendly staff a call today and
make it your own!
