"Difficult as it may seem to think of a car with a $156,000
manufacturer suggested retail price as an entry level car, this is
what the Brooklands was in the Rolls-Royce hierarchy. Comparisons
to executive class touring cars from Bavaria, England, or even
Japan are numerous, yet none of these automobiles possesses the
flat out exclusivity of a Bentley. There is no equal to a
Bentley-except, perhaps, its stablemate." Hemmings.com, Prestige
and Performance - 1993-1997 Bentley Brooklands
For consignment, a 1997 Bentley Brooklands sedan with a title
verified 30,783 actual miles. They say there's no such thing as an
inexpensive luxury car, but to get this one in your garage at
least, you won't have to mortgage the house!
Exterior
Look up "stately" in the dictionary as it pertains to cars and
you'll likely find a photograph of a square body Bentley. For sheer
presence, there's nothing like it on the road and this one exudes
grandeur with its British Racing Green paint. Naturally, the
upright and prominent grille is a trademark and the surround is
color keyed to the body while the dual headlights are based in a
black bezel over a green bumper. Let's not overlook the Flying B
hood ornament, a feature we'll be looking over, eventually. In
profile, 16-inch chrome wheels draw a sharp contrast to the green
and the boxy greenhouse is tall and regal with a sweeping C-pillar
that creates a strong visual connection to the flat decklid and
long overhang. Out back, wall to wall tail lights have giant
proportions and twin exhaust pipes fill the valence contour.
Imperfections include numerous scratches throughout and a few
scuffs.
Interior
While the outside pleases the eyes, the inside appeals to other
senses as well including touch, smell, and sight. The liberal use
of beige leather and burlwood on the doors alone is astounding and
the strip of green carpet on the lower panel caps off some of the
most beautiful doors you're ever going to find. Leather buckets
seats in front are embellished with green piping and stitched
inserts and while the driver's side shows some light wear, the
passenger's is excellent as is the rear bench where occupants will
feel like royalty while they utilize the wooden trays provided.
There's no getting around the modern feel to the steering wheel and
its airbag, but the dash combines the heritage of fine wood with
analog gauges and a colorful center panel with indicator lights and
digital readout. A blanket of burlwood continues across the dash
and down the center stack where it hides the AM/FM/Cassette radio
over an A/C panel, waterfalling to surround and frame the many seat
controls afforded front occupants. Dark green carpet floods the
floor with some slight wear near the gas pedal, while the headliner
is another benchmark design. Naturally, the trunk is completely
finished in green carpet, including the underside of the decklid
that holds an umbrella in place.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a clean and shrouded hand built 6.75 liter
turbocharged V8, rated at 296 horsepower and mated to a 4L80E 4
speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the rear wheels
and 2.69 gears.
Undercarriage
Clean driver quality conditions prevail underneath where the dual
exhaust travels in tandem through the original mufflers on its way
to the back. Power disc brakes are provided to all four wheels and
coil springs suspension is utilized at both ends as well.
Drive-Ability
It's smooth sailing in this racing green land yacht and it does
provide a quiet, cloud-like experience that's unique to the two
British brands. We note the locks are constantly cycling locked and
unlocked and the turn signals are not working. We also confirm the
consignor's report that there are issues with the alarm system.
Beyond these things, all functions operate as intended and we
return to the mall having avoided all Grey Poupon references. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Even with a few electrical gremlins, this is a lot of car for the
money. The craftsmanship is legendary and borne out in this 29 year
old Bentley. Take it to shows, let people sit in it, and then you
both will understand why Bentleys are considered some of the finest
automobiles ever produced.
