For Sale: 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL in Hope, Michigan

Vehicle Description

1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL R-Code Numbers-Matching

Your opportunity to own a stunning, numbers-matching, true R-code 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL hardtop.

  • According to enthusiasts and various automotive sources, reliable, exact production numbers for the 1964 Ford Galaxie R-code are difficult to determine, but there are some widely accepted estimates and confirmed figures for specific body styles.   While exact figures are elusive, it's estimated that Ford produced approximately 3,260 Q-code (410 hp) and R-Code (425 hp) Ford Galaxie 500 models for the 1964 model year, including both the hardtop and convertible versions of the 500/XL. The R-code designation, estimated at about 1200 vehicles produced, refers to a Galaxie factory-equipped with the dual-quad carburetor 427 cubic inch engine, rated at 425 horsepower. This was an extremely low-volume, high-performance option. And because many R-code Galaxies were built for racing, a low number of survivors exist today.
  • This car is an original triple-black, bucket seat, console 4-speed, with the 427 and dual 4-barrel carbs.
  • Odometer shows original miles 50,675 based on timelines and discussions from prior owners and excellent condition of the car prior to restoration.
  • Professional frame-off restoration in 2002, the body is rock solid and laser straight with a gorgeous, mirror-finish paint job in black urethane with 7 coats of clear.
  • The interior is original, as is most of the exterior trim.
  • The original, numbers-matching block is included with car.  Decision was made by prior owner to build-up a replacement block for fun and retain the original block for safe-keeping.
  • Current motor (see specifications below) is a replacement block with the original factory top end components (heads, intake, carbs and headers) transferred over.
  • Other options and comments:
    • Power brakes
    • Manual steering
    • Radio and clock do not currently work
    • Do not have the original Kelsey Hayes rims

This rare, early Ford factory muscle car turns heads on the street or in the show.  Absolutely no disappointments with the quality and rarity of this street beast.  From the flawless paint, to the perfect underside to the straight, original chrome – neither words or pictures do this car justice.  Must be seen to be believed.

Also included with the car are:

  • Significant notes and documentation from prior owners including hand-written and signed commentary, 2 Detroit speeding tickets from the early 1970s, and restoration information and specifications.
  • Original block.
  • Any original internal engine components and some additional left-over restoration parts.
