"There's never been a Chevrolet like this. Never a Chevrolet so
smartly styled, so advanced in comfort, safety, and performance
with economy. It's far and away the finest Chevrolet ever built,
the most beautiful buy of all new cars! Two distinctive new body
styles in Fleetline and Styleline with 14 grand new models
including the DeLuxe and Special". From a period sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1952 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe Belair coupe
showing 38,474 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title
exemption. This one has a rebuilt engine and transmission along
with other newer parts and if patterns hold, this Styleline will
follow in the long line of the model that have found new homes over
the years.
Exterior
Not all colors were drab colors in the early 50's and this one is
bathed in two stage Spring Green on the body and Beach White on the
roof and from the side, the colors and sleek shape of the car work
together to create a dramatic piece. This is further enhanced by
the 15-inch green steel wheels, red bowtie wheel covers, and wide
white wall tires. One can't help but notice the chrome gravel guard
on the bulging rear fenders and the trim spears along the side. But
wait, there's more! A tapered nose topped by a streamlined ornament
leaves nearly flat planes between it and the fenders, and this
design is referenced in the sloping rear, bulbous trunk, flanking
fancy polished tail light nacelles. The paint and body are
fantastic and we note minor imperfections including a scuff on a
rear fender, a ding in the side trim and rear window surround, a
spot of paint run, a dent in the rear bumper and scuffs on a gravel
guard, and chipped paint in a few place.
Interior
We're met with some slight patina on the door panels which split
panels of medium green and white, a sharp contrast with the split
bench seat which is finished in Moss Green cloth inserts between
panels of gray vinyl and along with the big rear bench, present in
very good condition. Multi hues of green are used from the steering
wheel forward, more in line with stock configuration, showing some
age, but wonderful in its originality. The chrome speaker grille in
the middle is a standout, shining like the finest juke box money
can buy over the ivory buttons of an AM radio. A tan and brown knit
floor covering does the job well and a mohair-like headliner
presents nicely with polished bows and matching visors. The trunk
has some patina in the form of usage and surface rust on the floor
under a rubber mat.
Drivetrain
Clean and period simple is the rebuilt 235.5ci inline six cylinder
fed fuel by a 1-barrel carburetor and mated to a rebuilt Powerglide
2-speed automatic transmission. Power is received by the rear axle
where it is put through 3.55 gears. The car still runs on a 6 volt
system.
Undercarriage
We have the typical age oxidation and surface rust on this simple
underside and an area of rust through on the inner rocker panels.
We also note a bit of oil on the rear differential. A single
exhaust moves through a stock style muffler and drum brakes are
supplied to all four wheels. Suspension is standard as coil springs
in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
We get behind the wheel of this big green machine and head out to
the test loop. We notice a tapping noise, possibly in the
valvetrain, so keep things light and short. During our test, we
note the radio, horn and clock are not working but all other
functions on board operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
This is a luxurious cruiser, in a fantastic color and all the
potential for comfortable commutes to your local show, cruise
night, or cars and coffee. Plus there's room for a family of four
here and enough room in the trunk for folding chairs, cooler, and
luggage. Chevrolet produced over a million cars in 1950 between the
Styleline and Fleetline and this one represents those common cars
very well, 76 years later.
