The Shelby "Rent-A-Racer" program, which started in 1966 as a
partnership between Shelby American and Hertz, gave people the
chance to rent race-ready GT350H Mustangs for just $17 per day and
$.17 per mile. Initially intended as a promotion for the Hertz
Sports Car Club, it soon became popular with weekend racers who
would use the cars for drag races or SCCA events. Carroll Shelby
and Hertz general manager Peyton Cramer agreed on a deal for around
1,000 specially modified GT350s-with sources reporting either 999
or 1001 vehicles produced. This Raven Black 1966 Shelby GT350H
(#6S1406) is listed in the Shelby Registry. A radio was installed
by Hi-Performance Motors on 3/27/1966. The car shipped to Eger
Motors, PA on 3/24/1966, arrived for dealer prep on 4/11/1966, and
was delivered to Hertz with a broken antenna and 0 miles for a
total of $3,794.75 (including options and fees). It was later sold
to Foss Motors on 8/18/1967. This example is a blue-chip investment
for the serious collector. It features a numbers-matching
driveline, ensuring that the heart of this machine is exactly as it
left Shelby American's Los Angeles facility. The legendary HiPo 289
Cubic Inch V8, producing 306 horsepower is coupled with a C4
Automatic, specifically tuned for the GT350H to handle the
increased power of the K-Code V8. The odometer currently displays a
remarkable 16,909 miles. Finished in the iconic "Raven Black" with
"Gold Le Mans" racing stripes-the signature livery of the Hertz
program-this GT350H commands attention from every angle. The
bodywork is laser-straight with excellent panel gaps. The chrome
trim, GT350 badging, and functional rear quarter scoops are all
present and correct. The cabin features the original-style black
knit vinyl Pony interior, the dash-mounted tachometer, and the
competition-style wood-rimmed steering wheel. Everything rides on
correct 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in period-correct
performance rubber. Very few of the original 1,001 Hertz Shelby
units have survived with their original drivetrains intact, making
this numbers-matching example a standout. Whether you are looking
to compete in concours events or add a centerpiece to a private
collection, this GT350H offers the perfect blend of performance,
rarity, and historical significance. We strongly recommend, welcome
and encourage personal or professional inspections of any vehicle
in our inventory prior to purchase. A deposit of two- thousand
five-hundred dollars is required to hold a vehicle. Upon receipt of
the deposit, the vehicle will be reserved for seven (7) days,
pending final payment.
