"There's never been a Chevrolet like this. Never a Chevrolet so
smartly styled, so advanced in comfort, safety, and performance
with economy. It's far and away the finest Chevrolet ever built,
the most beautiful buy of all new cars! Two distinctive new body
styles in Fleetline and Styleline with 14 grand new models
including the DeLuxe and Special". From a period sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1950 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe convertible
showing 3,692 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title
exemption. The brochure from 1950 touted "a lower look about the
clean, flowing lines that makes Chevrolet Bodies by Fisher even
more distinctly beautiful among low priced cars."
Exterior
You don't lose any of that flowing quality to the long bodied
Chevrolet by topping it with canvas and just like the rendering in
the brochure of a convertible, ours presents with Moonlight Cream
paint richly contrasting the black top. White wall tires and body
colored wheels keep things light below and chrome hubcaps shine
brightly up front and are mostly obscured by fender skirts in back.
All 14 body styles shared the epic and bold front fascia with heavy
chrome, while in profile, that brightwork is picked up by a side
spear, top trim on the pontoon rear fenders, and gravel guards that
defy front wheel kickback. In back, incredibly diminutive tail
lights flank and incredibly bulbous decklid, underscored by a
straight bumper. Imperfections include deglazing on windows,
bubbling paint and touch ups throughout, brightwork that is pitted
or show surface rust, chipped paint, rust on the pinch weld below
the rocker trim, scratches, evidence of filler, cracking paint,
chips and surface rust on chrome bumper. Please refer to photos for
locations and severity.
Interior
The palette on the inside is pale yellow and black and it's in very
nice shape, beginning with patterned vinyl on the door panels and
continuing on to the split bench seat up front and rear bench in
back, both of which present as fresh. The steering wheel, also two
tone, shows nicely ahead of a black dashboard with factory center
gauge cluster, ivory knobs and buttons including those on the AM
radio, and a center grille in polished metal. Two gauges have been
added for oil pressure and water temp and while they look out of
place, it's important information to have! The dash top and low
pile black carpet below are in fine shape and the big trunk shows
light usage and carries the spare.
Drivetrain
Driver quality is how we find the bay where a date correct 216.5ci
inline six cylinder resides, rated at 105 horsepower and fueled by
a 1-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a Powerglide 2-speed automatic
transmission that sends power to the rear axle and 3.55 gears. The
car is equipped with power steering and power disc brakes and runs
on a 12 volt system.
Undercarriage
A glossy rear axle and driveshaft highlight the underside where we
find a clean single exhaust running through a stock style muffler
on its way to exit out back where it meets a decorative deflector.
Power disc brakes are supplied up front with power drums in back
while suspension is comprised of coil springs and leaf springs,
front and rear respectively. We do note a good amount of rust on
the inner rocker panels and body braces as well as some forming on
the driver's door bottom.
Drive-Ability
We take our place in the clean interior and with six cylinders
firing, roll this Deluxe onto the blacktop where it cruises
smoothly through the paces. It's not hard to imagine an excited
family in the suburbs enjoying some top down fun in their new '50!
Meanwhile, a few things of note, the brake lights, radio, clock,
horn and heater blower do not work and the heater core is bypassed.
Beyond that, this 76 year old hums along just fine and all other
functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
It may be only 105 horsepower, but Chevrolet dedicated a lot of
space in their sales brochure to the valve in head technology that
was made more "powerful, smoother in operation, and positive in
acceleration". As they said in 1950, see the USA in your
