Vehicle Description

1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 — Complete Restoration
This 1974 FJ40 represents years of hands-on dedication and meticulous craftsmanship. I acquired the truck and have invested substantial time and resources bringing it to the level of quality you see today.
The Body & Paint
The foundation of this restoration started with replacing the original tub — a critical decision to ensure structural integrity. Once installed, I had the entire body refinished in Toyota’s Dune Beige, a classic color that captures the original character of these Land Cruisers. Every exterior component was either restored or replaced: new body mounts, bumpers, roll-up windows, side mirrors, and all seals and lights. The gray grille and bumpers were finished to match the precision of the paint work. What you’re looking at isn’t a quick respray — it’s a complete restoration from the metal up.
The Drivetrain
Under the hood lives a completely rebuilt 4.2-liter 2F inline-six. I took this engine down to its core: resurfaced cylinder head, new valve seals, rod and main bearings, piston rings, camshaft bushings, water pump, and every gasket that needed replacement. The carburetor and fuel system were serviced meticulously, new ignition components were installed, and the entire wiring harness was replaced for reliability. An aluminum radiator and stainless-steel exhaust system were fitted, and the frame was refinished to protect against corrosion.
Power routes through a four-speed manual transmission and dual-range transfer case — both serviced in 2024 along with the driveshafts and axles. The driveshafts and axles were also serviced in 2024 for smooth, reliable operation.
Suspension & Handling
Old Man Emu suspension components and a steering stabilizer were installed in 2024, transforming how this truck rides and handles. I also replaced the power steering gearbox, tie rod ends, brake master cylinder, and the entire brake system for confidence and safety. The truck rides on 16″ gray steel wheels wrapped in 255/85 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tires, and the front axle features manually locking hubs for trail capability.
The Interior
The cabin was refreshed with purpose. Both front bucket seats and the inward-facing rear jump seats were re-trimmed in gray leather with contrasting white stitching — sourced from a premium leather manufacturer in Colombia and hand-stitched to fit the FJ40’s specific contours perfectly. The floors and interior panels were restored, the dashboard was modified to accommodate a new air conditioning system (installed in 2024), and the roll bar was repainted. A retro-style stereo with Bluetooth was added for modern convenience without compromising the classic aesthetic.
Equipment & Features
A Warn VR EVO 10 winch is mounted on the front bumper with a controller included. Fog lights flank the grille, and a rear-mounted spare tire completes the exterior. Inside, you’ll find three-point seat belts on the front seats, a five-spoke steering wheel, and a replacement instrument cluster with gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, amperage, and fuel level.
The odometer currently shows 253 kilometers (~157 miles), representing the mileage accumulated since the refurbishment began.
What This Means
Every component in this FJ40 was touched with intention. There are no shortcuts here — no filler work, no lipstick on a pig. This is a restoration built by someone who cares about the details: OEM Toyota parts where it matters, professional craftsmanship throughout, and documentation for every major system. The photos in the gallery show the progression of this work, and the community on BaT can attest to the quality.
This isn’t just a truck. It’s proof that dedication and time create something worth driving.
