Cruisin Classics is proud to present this simply gorgeous 1954
Pontiac Star Chief. 1954 was the first year for Pontiac's top-tier
Star Chief model and this is an exceptionally nice example we're
looking at today. This Pontiac comes to us dressed with a respray
in it's factory colors - Coral Red with a Winter White top. The
paint job is very well done, deep and glossy, and borders on
show-quality. Being the "prestige" model, Pontiac loaded this car
up with copious amounts of chrome trim that looks almost as good
today as when this car was new. With the slick paint, gleaming
chrome, and excellent panel fitment, this Star Chief is certain to
command attention wherever it goes. Starting at the front end, the
hood features 5 "silver streaks" of chrome trim that run from the
tip of the hood to the windshield. At the forward bulge of the hood
is a chrome aeronautical-themed hood ornament with Chief Pontiac's
head at the front. The chief's head is made of amber plastic and it
illuminates when the headlamps are turned on - very cool! Beneath
the ornament at the leading edge of the hood is a chrome-trimmed
4-color Pontiac emblem in good condition. Flanking the emblem are
round headlights with chrome "eyelids" and bright bezels. Beneath
is an elaborate chrome grille with integrated turn signals. Down
low is a wrap-around chrome bumper with guards. When you walk
around to the side, you realize just how long this car is - roughly
18 feet from bumper to bumper! The chrome elements on the sides
are just as stylish as they are up front. There's chrome windshield
trim, wiper arms, wind deflectors, drip rail molding, window trim,
driver's mirror, door handles, antenna base trim, gas fill door
trim, rear taillight molding strip, three iconic stars on the rear
quarters, and body side molding that starts with a spear at the
front and flows toward the rear - dipping and widening after the
door and continuing all the way back to the rear bumper. The visual
effect of all this elegantly styled chrome against the deep coral
and white paint is literally captivating! Typical of luxury cars of
the era, this Pontiac has fender skirts over the rear wheels (but
unlike most, they fit very well and blend right in). Capping off
the side view are a set of body-color steel wheels with OEM Pontiac
hubcaps, all wrapped in Coker Classic wide white-wall tires - an
absolutely perfect choice for this opulent ride! Around back, the
decklid is adorned with the same silver streaks and multicolor
Pontiac badge as the hood. The taillights and the reverse lights
are both framed in chrome. The highlight of the rear is a
continental kit that was added by the previous owner, with coral
paint and chrome covering the spare tire. Capping off the
continental kit is another wrap-around chrome bumper, this one with
an overrider at the center. Dual chrome exhaust tips peek out from
underneath. The passenger side of the car is equipped with curb
feelers so that you don't scuff the white-wall tires while parking
on the street.
Under the large bulbous hood is a very stock-looking engine bay.
The sidewalls are painted satin black, but the firewall looks like
original Coral Red paint. Sitting in the center is a green-painted
268ci Pontiac straight eight engine, factory-rated at 127hp. Beside
the block is a 2-barrel carburetor topped with a black oil-bath air
cleaner. Attached by a belt at the front of the block is Delco-Remy
generator - yes, this is still a 6-volt system. In fact, there's a
brand new 6-volt Interstate battery on the driver's side. Steering
is manual, as are the 4-wheel drum brakes. Backing up the
straight-8 is a 4-speed Dual-Range Hydra-matic transmission that
works with a fluid coupling rather than a traditional clutch. We
were told by the most recent owner that the transmission was
rebuilt recently, though there is no receipt. Exhaust travels from
a cast manifold through a glass-pack style muffler then splits in
two before exiting the chrome tips with a subdued burble. While
underneath the car, you'll notice that the gas tank has recently
been replaced (2024 receipt) We noted while under the hood that the
springs are a little weak and have trouble holding the hood open
fully (there's a nice chrome hood prop in the trunk though).
When you open the driver's door, four working courtesy lights pop
on to illuminate a jaw-droppingly nice interior that serves as a
reminder of just how cool cars used to be! The door cards appear
original and they're still in very good condition, with
square-stitched Ivory vinyl, flat Coral vinyl, and chrome accents
that emulate those on the exterior. The leather bench seats carry
on the same theme with square-stitched button-tufted Coral bottoms
and flat Ivory backs with Coral inserts. The front seat was
recently re-stuffed and re-covered while the back seat appears
original. Both are in excellent condition with no issues. The front
seat offers seat belts, the rear does not. The rear seat offers
plenty of leg-room as well as armrests and ashtrays on both sides.
Overhead are a tight Ivory vinyl headliner with chrome bows, dual
visors, and a chrome-trimmed rearview mirror. Underfoot is plush
Coral carpet that looks great. The windows all sport chrome
surrounds, just like the exterior. Ahead of the driver is a big
3-spoke OEM steering wheel with a working chrome horn ring that
features Chief Pontiac at the center. On the column is a shifter
for the automatic transmission with a shift indicator. There is no
"park" designation, so you simply put it in neutral and set the
parking brake under the dash when you're done with your cruise.
Beyond the wheel is a Coral-painted steel dash that offers a
multitude of stylish chrome accents. Directly ahead of the wheel
there's an arching chrome-trimmed 100mph speedometer with working
gauges for battery, fuel, oil, and water beneath. The odometer
reads 72,407 miles and the title claims those miles to be actual.
To the right is a bright bezel that surrounds the working heat and
fan controls (fan is weak, but works) and the original tube-powered
Chieftain AM radio. The radio still works (after it warms up) and
it plays through a speaker in the center of the dash. The speaker
is encircled by three concentric chrome rings with a clock at the
center (inop.). There are controls for lights, wipers (work very
slowly), and vents on the lower dash near the column. Ahead of the
passenger on the dash there's a chrome trim plate with a "Pontiac
Eight" call-out just above the glovebox. The glovebox has a working
courtesy light and it contains a receipt from 1959 when the car was
sold to a gentleman in Iowa for $750, a scattering of registrations
from 1963-1988, a receipt for a new fuel tank in 2024, and a
battery receipt from 1968. Lift the trunklid to find a fully
finished trunk featuring the same materials and style as the
interior. In the trunk is a foldable car show tent made especially
for this car (in it's own carrying case), a Pontiac Star Chief
plaque, 3 OEM hubcaps, the aforementioned hood prop, and a car
cover.
This 1954 Star Chief is the epitome of 1950's American luxury cars
- big, loaded with chrome trim, stylish, comfortable, and smooth
driving! This car is proof of the old addage "they just don't make
them the way they used to"! This Pontiac is turn-key ready to hit
the road to anywhere - a car show, ice cream with the kids, dinner
on the town, or just a leisurely cruise through the country! If you
dislike attention, you may want to choose a different car, because
this Star Chief will turn heads and draw crowds wherever you go!
