motorFew cars offer a more unique driving experience than Mazda's
RX-series of sports cars, their light weight, rotary-powered coupe
that thrived in Japan's 80s golden era. Rotaries are known for
their unique engine note, high-winding RPM band and response - and
this Turbo II adds in another layer once boost builds and you start
hunting for that 8,500 RPM rev limit.This 1987 RX-7 is Mazda's
second-generation RX-chassis, known as the FC. The RX-7 was
introduced 1978 with the naturally-aspirated 12A, and underwent a
substantial refresh in 1985, introducing a smoother, more
aerodynamic look thanks to the bumper fascias, and much more power
thanks to the addition of a Hitachi HT18 turbo. While they don't
have the sub-2,000 RPM torque of a traditional piston engine, their
two-stroke-like power band that surges more and more as you get
near the redline encourages you to bomb down back roads and byways
like few other engine combos - and those little things love it,
too. Heck, it's almost a requirement for maintenance, and Mazda
intended for them to live in the upper regions of the
tachometer.Speaking of maintenance, this RX-7 underwent close to
$6,000 in maintenance and repairs to get it back to road-worthy
spec after the last owner had left it in storage for many years in
the 90's and 2000's. According to the previous owner, the motor had
been rebuilt at a specialty shop in New York about 5 years ago then
driven every few weeks since. We purchased this Wankel-powered
machine in the mountains north of Asheville, NC from the original
owner who was in his 80's. No, it was not trailered home we drove
it the 3 hours back to Aiken. In our hands, it's started and ran
great while we focused on refreshing the brakes, suspension and
little details. New end link bushings; repacked front wheel
bearings and a rear wheel bearing was replaced too; brake pads
replaced and fluid flushed; the clock spring in the column was
replaced; the shifter bushings were replaced and a short-shifter
installed; A/C charged for ice-cold air; and all fluids in the
motor and drivetrain were replaced. Also included is a new set of
decals, should you want to install - the passenger Turbo II logo
was barely remaining when it came to us, so it was removed during
detailing and the original driver-side decal retained for
originality, but at request, we can also install these precisely
in-house should the buyer prefer. With 62,191 miles on the odometer,
this little red RX-7 churned about 1,600 miles a year since 1987,
and is a clean survivor despite its age... knocking on 40-years-old
now.Car Cave drives our vehicles regularly so a few miles maybe
added to the odometer. To see the full service documents for this
