The final year of the air cooled Porsche 911
Many might consider their own automobiles to be rolling art pieces,
Daniel Arsham takes his cars to a completely different level. Based
in New York, Arsham is known for making automotive-centered art
pieces, in this case usable pieces of art that you can drive. In
the form of "993A", this "Arsham-spec" 911 represents the best of
the aircooled Porsches with its own brand of artistic innovation.
Being the 993 generation, it starts with the final and most refined
aircooled Porsche platform ever made.
The 993 was completely disassembled in Arsham's own private garage,
supported by close collaborator Greg Anagostopolous, mechanic and
self-trained artist. Throughout the design process Arsham had a
vision for what the 993 would become, resulting in a high-powered,
aesthetically redesigned Porsche 911 to honor the final hurrah of
the air cooled cars. A bespoke green leather interior was created,
color-matched hardback sport seats, and bespoke Vanilla Yellow
paint that was believed to be painted on just one factory 993 Turbo
S. Through other mechanical upgrades and restoration, the 993 was
reimagined through Daniel Arsham's vision, becoming a rolling work
of art that was revealed in 2024.
Upon arriving at Canepa, the car was looked over meticulously as a
part of the "Canepa Difference" process. The 993 was completely
detailed inside and out, including hand washing of the underside of
the car. The car was given a comprehensive test drive and
mechanical inspection, resulting in a clean bill of health and an
excellent example of the 993 ready to be enjoyed. Now, for the
first time since completion, Daniel Arsham's personal "993A" art is
ready to be used, viewed, and enjoyed by an owner looking for the
duality of a driveable piece of art.
Artist's summary:
In late 2024, artist Daniel Arsham introduced the 993A, a project
designed to honor the legacy of the Porsche 993, which represents
the final generation of air-cooled 911s produced between 1994 and
1998. This specific generation is historically significant for its
successful integration of classic Porsche architecture with modern
technical advancements, most notably the introduction of a
multi-link rear suspension and improved aerodynamics. As the
definitive conclusion to the original air-cooled lineage, the 993
remains a highly coveted model that marks a pivotal era in
automotive engineering.
The creation of the 993A involved an extensive eight-month
mechanical overhaul led by automotive specialist Greg
Agastanopolous in Arsham's personal garage. The original 3.6-liter
engine was blueprinted and expanded to a 3.8-liter displacement,
incorporating high-performance components such as Carrillo
connecting rods and CNC-machined cylinder heads. These power
upgrades were supported by a custom ECU remap, a rebuilt G50
transmission, and a bespoke suspension system developed by KW
Suspension to Arsham's specific requirements. Additionally, the
braking and exhaust systems were fully restored to factory
standards, ensuring that the vehicle's performance was as refined
as its aesthetic presentation.
Visually, the 993A is defined by its Paint to Sample Vanilla Yellow
exterior, a rare color historically associated with a single
factory Turbo S. This exterior palette is paired with
graphite-finished wheels and a custom interior executed by German
leather artisan Justin Placek. The cabin features triple-stitched
green leather, body-colored seat backrests, and custom-finished
gauges from Arsham Studio, drawing clear inspiration from the
bespoke craftsmanship of the Porsche Sonderwunsch program.
Following its debut at The Bridge in September 2024, the 993A
stands as a sophisticated fusion of heritage engineering and
contemporary artistic innovation.
About artist Daniel Arsham
With work known to be at the intersection of art, architecture, and
performance, Daniel Arsham has cemented himself in the art world
since the early 2000s. Based in New York city, his commentary on a
wide range of subjects and matters has extended over two decades
with his signature concept, "Fictional Archaeology," taking iconic
objects from the present and reimagining them as geological relics
from a distant future.
Arsham is well known for being an automotive enthusiast, both seen
throughout his work and his automotive collections. One of his most
famous series, "Eroded Cars" takes the form of life-size automobile
forms that look as if they've been unearthed from a futuristic dig
site. Eroded Porsche 911, perhaps his most recognized work in this
vein, was created in multiple versions including white quartz and
ash. Eroded DeLorean is also another famous work of art by
Arsham.
