The Shelby Cobra has to be one of the most exhilarating cars of all time. All those beautiful curves on a small lightweight roadster powered by a roaring Ford V8 – is there anything else like it? And this example, with its brilliant red paint and Mustang SVT Cobra engine, does not disappoint.
This professional build was completed in 2021 using the well-proven Factory Five platform, specifically their Mark 3.1 design which made enhancements to use Ford’s modular motor. The odometer shows just over 600 miles so everything is well sorted out but still in excellent condition. High build quality is evident throughout the car with a fit and finish you don’t always get on a replica. It looks fantastic with its Viper Red paint and 17” Halibrand style wheels. The side exhaust, roll hoop, tubular bumpers, wind wings, and pop-up fuel door are all nice accents as well.
The engine is a fuel-injected DOHC 4.6L V8 from a Mustang SVT Cobra that had been wrecked with fewer than 10k miles. This setup was rated at 320 hp from the factory but has been upgraded with an SCT tuner, BBK Performance air intake, and better flowing side exhaust. It is estimated at more than 350 hp today which makes for quite a ride in such a small car. The transmission is a Tremec TR3550 5-speed manual followed by an 8.8” limited slip rear end with 3.50 gears. The steering uses a Flaming River rack and pinion arrangement, while braking comes from Mustang Cobra 4-wheel discs with hydroboost power assist.
Inside the car you will find Factory Five bucket seats with Simpson 4-point harnesses (you can just use the lap belts if desired). The leather trimmed dash is neat and clean with a full set of Classic Instruments gauges including a reverse rotation 180 mph speedometer and an 8k tachometer. Equipment includes a cabin heater along with a horn, turn signals, hazards, and emergency brake. The trunk is also nicely finished.
Driving a Cobra really is a thrill; the timeless design, wicked performance, and open air driving create a visceral experience. And while this motor rumbles out the side pipes, it also maintains good street manners with a steady idle and easy starts. Combine all that and you’ve got a Cobra you won’t stop thinking about.
