This is the 1191st Convertible D built, completed on July 23, 1959.
Finished in a period-correct exterior color, Aquamarine Blue
(Solid/Non-Metallic) color code 5707 - a simply stunning color
combination! The interior is upholstered in Cashmere, with German
tan square-weave carpets, a black canvas soft-top, and a black
canvas boot cover. According to the Kardex, factory options include
an ashtray, a cigarette lighter, US-style overrider bumpers, a
Ponto Stabil side mirror, two safety belts, a jack, a spare wheel,
and a tool kit.
Three owners of Southern California Convertible D. The first owner,
David Sayles, took a European-delivered car in Holland in July of
1959. Sayles was from La Jolla, California, and enjoyed this 356
for nearly 16 years. The second owner purchased the Convertible D
on September 30, 1975. Mrs. Kastner was from Tarzana, California,
and owned this 356 for 46 years. It has been a California 356 for
the past 63 years; the third and current owner had this 356
restored by European Collectibles.
European Collectibles did a concours restoration on this 1959
Convertible D over 18 months from 2021 to 2022. During the
restoration, this 356 was completely disassembled and stripped down
to the bare shell so that every aspect could be properly addressed.
Perfectly straight body with excellent gaps & panel fit. The body
and panels are original and still retain their correct
stampings/numbers. All panels were pre-fit with bumpers, overrider
bars, a windshield frame, and a soft top to ensure the absolute
best result. All the chrome was triple-plated, and all the
components were restored or replaced.
Mechanically, it is in excellent condition! The complete driveline
was rebuilt, including the engine, transmission, suspension,
braking system, fuel system, and a new wire harness. The matching
1600cc Normal engine delivers plenty of power, and the manual
4-speed 716 transmission shifts through all gears with ease. The
four-wheel drum brakes have been rebuilt, including the wheel
cylinders, brake lines, and master cylinder. The undercarriage is
fully detailed, including the suspension, engine, and
transmission.
Complete with a tool kit, jack, owner's manual, boot cover, Porsche
Kardex, photo documentation of the restoration, and a coffee table
book. Truly one of the best Convertible D's that you will find that
is well sorted with no issues. Absolutely superb in every way,
ready for immediate concours, rally events, or to drive and
enjoy!
