1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 For Sale
This 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is finished in red with a black hood
stripe over a black interior, showing 56,017 said-to-be original
miles. The 1971 model year marked the first of the restyled, larger
197173 Mustang body, and the Mach 1 sat at the top of the
performance trim ladder this example carries that factory pedigree
along with a few mild bolt-on upgrades on the engine side.
Power comes from a 351 Cleveland V8 topped with an Edelbrock intake
manifold and a Holley carburetor a familiar combination among
Cleveland enthusiasts and a sensible step up from the factory
induction setup. Behind the engine is the period-correct FMX
three-speed automatic transmission, and out back the 3.00 gearing
makes for a comfortable highway cruiser rather than a
strip-oriented setup.
Braking has been recently measured, with front disc pads at 10/32"
and rear drum shoes at 6/32" both leaving plenty of friction
material in service. Inside, the all-black cabin includes power
windows, a notable factory option for a 1971 Mustang, along with a
center pod gauge cluster supplementing the main instrument
panel.
The 197173 Mustangs occupy a distinct chapter in the model's
history: a larger, broader body style that closed out the original
Mustang era before the downsized Mustang II arrived for 1974. A
Mach 1 with the 351 Cleveland, FMX automatic, comfortable highway
gearing, and reported original mileage in the mid-50s represents a
usable, drivable example of that final big-body generation.
