History and Model Significance
The 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL represented the last major update to
the R107 generation, which began in 1972 with the 450SL. This model
introduced a larger, more powerful V8 engine and brought
enhancements such as a new rear suspension, anti-lock brakes (ABS),
a limited-slip differential, a driver's side airbag, and standard
leather upholstery. The federally mandated high-mounted third brake
light was also added, positioned on the trunk.
Performance
Power comes from a Bosch fuel-injected 5.5-liter/338 cubic inch V8
delivering 227 bhp, paired with a four-speed automatic
transmission. Motor Trend measured a 0-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds,
while Road & Track reported 7.5 seconds-making the 560SL over three
seconds quicker than the 380SL .
Pricing
At the start of the 1986 model year, the 560SL's base price was
$48,200-equivalent to about $143,700 today, which is just below the
price of a 2026 AMG SL 55 convertible. By year-end, the base price
had increased to $53,730.
