The phrase "They don't make them like they used to" is no doubt
overused, but it definitely holds true as far as this 1960 Bentley
S2 Saloon is concerned. With its substantial wheelbase, lengthy
hood and signature two-tone paint job, this British classic
absolutely exudes luxury and is about as fitting an ambassador for
opulent '60s automotive aesthetics as they come. It has come
through the past 65-plus years in strong fashion, with its
head-turning ability and properly fitted exterior well-intact. Its
set of 15" wheels show no concerning curb rash and the glass
surrounding its cabin is still nice and clear. Sure, you can see
some evidence of the passing years at close range, but this Bentley
looks plenty sharp as is and, with a little well-placed attention,
can be elevated back to its original stellar condition.
The cashmere leather interior features all the luxury appointments
you'd expect from an automotive icon, including an array of
burlwood accents that appear surprisingly fresh for a car from this
era. Climb in, lower yourself into the driver's seat and you're
sure to feel your mood elevated. Both the dash area and the
headliner are in fine shape and while there's some wear on the
heavily trafficked touch points inside the cabin, not all that
surprising for a car that has been around since the Eisenhower
administration, this interior appears pretty compelling just as it
is and could be downright show-stopping with some skilled
workmanship.
Everything remains in stock configuration beneath the hood, where a
period-correct 6.2-liter aluminum V8 engine sits at the center of a
very expansive compartment. Outfitted with a pair of one-barrel
carburetors perched on a factory-issue intake manifold, this
Bentley starts up without issue and holds an idle that's smoother
than you might expect. Take it out on the road and you'll find that
its 4-speed automatic transmission shifts through its gears
properly and it tracks arrow straight. Power steering makes this
sizable ride surprisingly easy to maneuver and while its power
brakes seem to take a little effort to bring things to a stop, the
factory brake system on a classic Bentley like this one is designed
to function with a minimum of effort, so this can be remedied.
