The GMT400 generation of GM trucks ran from 1988 through 1998 and
left a mark on American truck culture that is still felt today.
When it debuted, it was the first full-size pickup truck in America
to offer independent front suspension across the entire lineup, a
significant step forward that improved ride quality, handling, and
durability over everything that came before it. The SLE trim was
GMC's mid-level package, sitting above the base SL and bringing a
noticeably more refined level of equipment and finish. This one is
finished in Light Quasar Blue Metallic and Silver with a silver
pinstripe, a two-tone combination that was one of the sharpest
looks available on these trucks, and it presents in very clean
condition with just 70,000 original miles.
Under the hood is the 7.4L big block V8 backed by a four-speed
automatic. The 7.4 was the largest gasoline engine GM offered in
this generation, chosen by buyers who needed serious towing and
hauling capability without making any compromises. It pulls from
the bottom of the RPM range with authority and keeps pulling all
the way through, the way a proper big block should. Four-wheel
drive rounds out a truck that is as capable as it looks.
Inside, the blue cloth interior matches the exterior and remains in
clean, well-kept condition. Power windows and power locks were not
standard on every truck of this era, and having them on an SLE
gives this one a level of comfort and convenience that a base model
simply did not offer.
The GMT400 trucks have developed a strong and growing collector
following over the last several years. Clean original examples with
low mileage and the big block engine are becoming genuinely hard to
find, and buyers who want one in this kind of shape are learning
quickly that the window is getting smaller. A 70,000 mile two-tone
SLE with the 7.4 does not sit around long.
