"The Mercedes Benz 560SL roadster. Is it the car you want above all
others because of its mighty V8 power, or its blend of quick
reflexes and sumptuous comfort, or its incredible workmanship and
finish? Only one thing is certain, you'll have the driving
experience of your life finding out." Script from an 80's
television commercial.
For consignment, a 1987 Mercedes Benz 560SL roadster with a title
verified 51,727 actual miles. Nearly 14,000 560SL's each year
between 1986 and 1987. This one has many newer parts and is a well
maintained, low mileage SL ready for some good time cruising.
Exterior
The infamous three car configuration begins with the accessory hard
top, painted Signal Red to match the body, a vibrant shade of red
that will energize you before you even turn the key! Car number two
wears a canvas top with plastic rear window and the third iteration
is everyone's favorite, the top down convertible, a straight
shouldered, well proportioned car that still exemplifies wealth and
success. The ribbed lower panels are stylistically matched by the
sculpted tail lights and front side markers, notably functional for
keeping dirt from the recesses of the lights. A low flat hood looms
long in front, capped by the tri-tipped star and horizontally
barred grille, with the quad headlights backed by reflective
plastic. Overall, this handsome car's paint and trim is in very
nice condition with imperfections noted, touched up chips, some
curb rash, and some overspray on the rocker panel.
Interior
Palomino saddle door panels offer an earthy palette with smooth MB
tex that's in fine condition and the matching MB tex bucket seats
are robust and clean with substantial polished metal framing. In
back is a package shelf with plush carpet that continues to the
front where its toe deep softness is covered by woven mats for
occupants. Clean, efficient, and handsome is how we would describe
the black steering wheel, instrument cluster, and center stack
where an AM/FM/Cassette player is perched within the dark burlwood
trim piece which waterfalls down to surround the shifter, here with
some slight hazing of the wood veneer but still in very good
condition. Saddle colored material that matches the doors makes up
the rest of the clean dash. There's tan carpet that finishes the
trunk, and it's nicer than the carpet we have in our house!
Drivetrain
Under the hood, the clean party continues with the venerable 5.6
liter SOHC V8 putting out 277 horsepower and mated to a 4-speed
automatic transmission sending power through 2.47 gears in the rear
axle. The car has power steering, power brakes, and air
conditioning. We note the hood insulator pad is disintegrated
beyond repair but no doubt there is an aftermarket solution.
Undercarriage
Showing typical signs of use but overall in nice condition, the
underside features dual exhaust that travels in tandem to find its
original muffler which emits a pair of exhaust tips. Four wheel
power disc brakes are on board and independent suspension at both
ends consists of coil springs.
Drive-Ability
Confident, surefooted, and quick, the SL series never disappoints
and is one of the great sport luxury cars in automotive history.
This one does everything well including holding level on turns and
braking on point. We note the A/C is not working and the little
gauge that tells you if your accelerator behavior is economical or
not is not functioning, so you'll just have to wing it! All other
functions on board work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Lots of newer parts were added to this car including battery,
belts, shocks, injectors, wiring harness, thermostat, and fan
clutch so it's ready to be enjoyed. A hardtop rack also comes with
the car to store the piece when not in use. Red on saddle is a nice
spec and the relatively low mileage should put this one in your
crosshairs.
