According to a copy of its factory data card, No. 143 is a special-order Southern California Black Plate example with five owners from new and retains its original engine, transmission, and body components. Currently finished in DB 160 Stone Grey over L3 Green vinyl with green plaid fabric inserts, it is further equipped with desirable factory Rudge wheels and a 3.64 rear axle ratio. Among the most iconic and technically advanced automobiles of the postwar era, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing stands as a landmark in both engineering and design.

Originally delivered to its first owner, Roger M. Andrews, the car passed through a short chain of notable custodians, including Bill Hoffman, L. Milton Wolf, Jim McNary, and, most recently, Nicolas Clemence. Recognizing the integrity of its original, straight, rust-free structure, it was selected as an ideal candidate for a comprehensive body-off, concours-level restoration.

The restoration was executed over a multi-year period by a team of marque specialists, with a focus on authenticity, precision, and mechanical excellence. The process began with a complete disassembly to a bare shell, including separation of the body from the chassis, during which the drivetrain, suspension, and all ancillary systems were carefully removed. The body was stripped, metal-finished, and prepared with meticulous attention to panel alignment and preservation of original stampings, including the body number "139" retained on the engine firewall. Original hardware, brackets, assemblies, and VIN plates were carefully cataloged and retained, with components restored using correct finishes, including replating and refinishing consistent with factory specifications. Mechanical systems were comprehensively rebuilt, including a complete transmission and rear-end overhaul, with transmission internals upgraded to Roadster-spec components and gearing, and the suspension, braking, and steering systems restored. The fuel, cooling, and electrical systems were addressed in detail, including the installation of a new wiring harness with proper materials and finishes. The interior was restored with equal care, including refurbishment of seat frames, installation of new upholstery, and precise fitment of trim, insulation, and brightwork, and features both leather and cloth seat inserts. Final assembly was carried out with a focus on both authenticity and drivability, followed by extensive testing and sorting to ensure proper operation of all systems.

Today, the Gullwing presents in exceptional condition, with precise panel fit and a high level of detail throughout. The exterior is complemented by show-quality brightwork, trim, and rubber components, while the cabin is equally well presented, featuring its original two-spoke steering wheel and restored VDO instrumentation. The engine compartment reflects a high level of attention to detail, retaining its original washer bottle and correctly finished sheet metal with proper coatings, finishes, and hardware consistent with factory specifications. The restoration is comprehensively documented, with a photo record capturing each stage of the process along with detailed records outlining the investment in its execution.

Powered by its original 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 215 horsepower and paired with its original four-speed manual transmission, this 300 SL delivers the performance and engineering sophistication that define the model. Accompanying the car is an extensive collection of documentation and accessories, including its Mercedes-Benz service book, factory literature, workshop manuals, toolkit, Rudge wheel tools, date-coded spare wheel, original black plate, restoration records, photo books, period Gullwing Group publications, matching luggage, belly pans, and over 40 years of service history. A compelling addition to any collection, this 300 SL Gullwing stands as a particularly well-executed example, uniting documented provenance, original components, and a restoration completed to the highest standard.
