This exceptional and incredibly rare early Alpha One conversion
pays tribute to one of the most iconic sports cars ever built-the
1962 Ferrari 250 GTO-while being expertly crafted atop a solid and
well-documented 1977 Datsun 280Z platform. Acquired from the estate
of a long-term owner in the Cincinnati area, this example is
believed to be a factory Alpha One build, completed in the late
1980s-an era when these kits reached such a high level of accuracy
that Ferrari ultimately took legal action against Alpha One due to
how convincingly they replicated the original GTO design.
Originally finished in dark green over a brown interior, this
documented 86,000-mile, clean Indiana-titled 280Z has been
transformed into a seamless and highly authentic recreation
specifically modeled after a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. The Alpha One
body has been expertly bonded and fitted with exceptional
precision, showing no signs of stress cracking and featuring tight,
consistent panel gaps throughout. The lacquer paint presents
beautifully, easily rating a 9 out of 10, with no evidence of
bonding flaws or runs. All Alpha One badging was intentionally
removed by the previous owner to enhance the car's visual
authenticity, resulting in a strikingly accurate tribute that
commands attention and regularly fools even seasoned enthusiasts at
a glance.
Underneath, the car benefits from early-life Ziebart
rust-proofing-still visible through factory plugs-which has helped
preserve the integrity of the chassis. Mechanically, the original
2.8-liter fuel-injected inline-six has been completely rebuilt,
along with the factory 4-speed manual transmission. The result is a
car that runs and drives exceptionally well-arguably better than
new-with zero leaks, no mechanical concerns, and strong, reliable
performance. Even the wiring throughout the vehicle has been
refreshed to a like-new standard, further reinforcing the quality
of the build.
Inside, the car has been fully reimagined to better reflect the
race-inspired nature of the original 1962 GTO. The interior was
completely stripped, refinished, and upgraded with custom aluminum
race panels, while the tub was sanded, epoxy-primed, and coated in
durable Raptor liner for added protection and sound deadening. The
seats and trim are finished in red diamond-stitched black leather,
complemented by custom-fitted carpeting. Comfort has also been
upgraded with the addition of a modern Vintage Air heating and air
conditioning system, replacing the original dealer-installed
unit.
Further enhancing the authenticity are Zenith knock-off wire wheels
(a correct Alpha One option), genuine Ferrari fender badges, a
proper 250 GTO-style steering wheel, vintage Ferrari-style exterior
door buttons, and a color-matched engine bay. All lighting,
signals, wipers, and safety equipment are fully functional, making
this car as usable as it is visually impressive.
This Alpha One Ferrari 250 GTO recreation-modeled specifically
after a 1962 example-represents a unique opportunity to own a
beautifully executed tribute from the golden era of high-quality
kit builds. Constructed before legal pressures halted production,
and backed by a well-documented donor chassis and extensive
restoration work, this car stands as an ultra-rare, meticulously
crafted homage to one of the most celebrated automobiles in
history.
