There's something about a 1971 Chevelle that just hits different.
It marked the end of an era when GM muscle still carried real
street presence, and this one cranks that attitude up to eleven.
Finished in bold red over a black bucket seat interior, this coupe
has the kind of stance that tells you it means business before the
engine ever fires. The cowl induction hood, Cragar S/S wheels, and
just-right driver quality paint give it that authentic street
machine vibe that defined the golden age.
Under the hood is where things get serious. A Skip White
Performance 572ci big block V8 sits front and center, packing a
brutal 734 horsepower and 717 lb-ft of torque. Built with a Comp
Cams hydraulic roller cam, Holley 950cfm aluminum carb, and a Davis
street and strip distributor, this engine is all about raw, usable
power. Cooling is handled by an Entropy aluminum radiator with dual
electric fans, so it is just as comfortable cruising as it is
laying down rubber.
Backing that monster is an American Powertrain Tremec TKX 5-speed,
paired with a McLeod clutch and billet flywheel. Bang through the
gears with a Hurst shifter and feel every ounce of that big block
torque transfer through a stout 12-bolt rear with 4.11 gears and
posi. Traction bars help keep things planted, making this Chevelle
as functional as it is ferocious.
Inside, the upgrades keep coming. Dakota Digital VHX gauges bring
modern precision to a classic layout, while the center console,
tilt steering column, and upgraded sound system make it a
comfortable place to spend time. Power steering and
hydroboost-assisted front disc brakes give this Chevelle the
control to match its power, turning it into a true street and strip
performer.
The 1971 Chevelle holds a unique place in muscle car history as one
of the last true big block bruisers before emissions began
tightening the leash. Finding one built to this level with a 572
under the hood and a 5-speed to row is a rare opportunity. Recently
gone through by Gearhead Classics, this is a dialed-in machine
ready to hit the street hard.
