"There is a certain hesitation people seem to feel just before they
slide behind the distinctive wheel of a Z28 for the first time. An
inescapable awe at such technological capability confronting the
forces of physics and nature. It is an emotion few people forget.
Yet it evaporates with the turn of the key as all this performance
thunders to life. Another driver is admitted into that exclusive
club of Z28 pilots who know that this is not a car you merely
drive. It's a car you put on and wear with such authority that it
changes your life together." Lofty prose from the 1984 Camaro sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with a title verified
16,596 actual miles. Maybe you pined for a Z28 back in high school,
then settled down, had some kids, a job, and daily routine. Well,
now's your chance to get the car of your dreams with this
proverbial time capsule from the 80's!
Exterior
Without a doubt, red, white, and this car's color, Black were the
three most popular Z28 colors in 1984, the year with the largest
third gen Camaro production. Naturally, the Z features the
distinctive silver band rocker panel topped by two tone gray
striping that encircles the car and enhances the appearance of a
lean and low stance. Deep set quad headlights front a hood that
features a unique and now recognizable faux hood scoop stamped in
and painted flat black. In back, black bisected three color tail
lights are tucked under a streamlined wing and over the black
bumper cover while 15-inch 5 spoke wheels set you apart from base
Camaros. What all Camaros share is the F-body's long hood and
sloping, curving rear glass, here fully tinted. Imperfections
include a few chips in the paint, a few spots where the paint is
not smooth, chips at wheel openings, an uneven spot under the
stripe decal, flex cracks in the front apron as well as some chips
and various scuffs.
Interior
Geometrical patterns were a big deal in the 80's and our interior
is replete with a diagonal line design that begins on the door
panels mixing Light Sand and black, accented perfectly by the black
door hardware and both left and right presently cleanly. The seats
borrow that design and apply it to the sides, framing a beige vinyl
central band of the buckets in a striking presentation which is
mirrored on the 2+2's in back, and all four seats are in great
condition. Our pre airbag steering wheel has three wide spokes and
a black wrapped rim, fronting a simple instrument cluster behind a
black textured faceplate while an AM/FM radio and vent panel occupy
the center stack. Fairly no frills here, but this is how we rolled!
Our center console is spectacularly clean and so is the shifter and
it resides over clean beige carpet below. Up top, the overhead
console is fantastically vintage and the headliner around it
remains very nice. Gray carpet floods the cargo area which has
sides finished with plastic panels.
Drivetrain
Whistle clean is how we find the 305ci HO V8, carbureted with 4
barrels and rated at 150 horsepower, but the girls didn't care
about those numbers if you were rocking a Z28, even if the boys on
Front Street did! The 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission routes
power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.73 gears.
Undercarriage
For a 42 year old car, it's pretty astounding underneath and a
testament to the low mileage. There's surface rust and metal
oxidation that time is going to trigger, but otherwise it's a trip
back to '84. The single exhaust runs through the original muffler
and exits via dual angle-cut tailpipes. Power disc brakes are
supplied to all four wheels and coil springs are also at both ends
with a torque arm accompanying in back.
Drive-Ability
All systems go for this unmolested 80's muscle car as the 5.0 liter
comes to life and the 4-speed propels us around the test loop in
fine style. No complaints here as the simplicity of the car is what
makes it enjoyable and the functionality test comes back with
flying colors, a perfect 100! While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
We'll stop short of saying museum quality, but if you need a very
nice representative of a very popular car, this one fits the bill.
Someone, (or several people), tucked this one away and brought it
out for special occasions and with a few podium appearances at GM
Nationals in Carlisle, what you have here is a winner in black!
