1970 Shelby GT500 Convertible – 428 Super Cobra Jet, Automatic, Gulfstream Aqua, One of the Last Ever Built
Some cars you explain. Some cars you don't have to.
This is a 1970 Shelby GT500 Convertible. Production number 3194, out of just 3,204 GT500s built for the 1969-70 run. Based on everything we know, this places it among the last 15 convertibles ever produced, and quite possibly the very last one off the line. If you've been in the Shelby world for any length of time, you already understand what that means.
The history
From 1967 to 1970, the Shelby GT500 was the top of Ford's performance ladder. Carroll Shelby took the Mustang and turned it into something else entirely, a factory-built, race-inspired machine that could hold its own against anything on the street. By 1970, rising insurance costs and tightening regulations had made that kind of car politically difficult to build. Ford and Shelby wound it down. The final-year convertibles, already rare when new, have become genuinely hard to find in any condition. Finding one like this is something else.
The car
Finished in Gulfstream Aqua, one of the more striking and sought-after Shelby colors, with correct Shelby side striping and a black interior. The 15-inch 5-spoke Shelby wheels are present and correct. The fiberglass body components fit well, the chrome bumpers and trim are pristine, and the power convertible top is in great condition, operating smoothly and sealing properly. The undercarriage has been completely restored and finished in correct oxide red, with factory markings and finishes preserved throughout. This isn't a car that was thrown together to look right in photos. Point a light anywhere on it, top to bottom, and it holds up. The car presents itself in excellent, show-quality condition and is genuinely investment-grade.
Under the hood
The original 428 Super Cobra Jet V8 is in place. It starts easily, idles strong, and sounds exactly the way a big-block SCJ should. Factory valve covers, correct exhaust routing, and all the details that matter to a serious Shelby buyer are accounted for. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and makes this an effortless car to drive and enjoy.
The interior
Black vinyl, factory-correct, well preserved. Shelby badging, woodgrain trim, bucket seats, center console, and classic instrumentation. Nothing has been unnecessarily modified. It looks and feels like what it is, a properly restored, authenticated Shelby.
Documentation
A Marti Report is included, which confirms the car's production details and authenticity. Dutch registration is in place (plate PM-26-08, registered after the listing photos were taken). Belgian or German registration is available on request.
Paperwork and shipping
We handle the complete export and shipping process from our end. For US buyers, that means no ports to chase, no freight paperwork to navigate. In most cases you simply collect the car from your nearest shipping yard, and in some cases we can arrange delivery straight to your door.
A word to our American buyers
We're based in the Netherlands, and we want to be upfront about that, because we know what it means to wire money across the Atlantic for a car you haven't sat in yet. We sell several high-end American classics to the US every year, and our customers have always left happy. We've learned what American buyers need from us: honest condition descriptions, thorough photo and video documentation, and logistics that don't become your problem.
We handle the complete shipping process from our side. All the export paperwork, documentation and freight coordination is taken care of. We've done this enough times that the process is smooth, and we're happy to walk you through every step of it.
If you want more photos, a walkaround video, undercarriage footage, or close-ups of any specific detail, just ask. We'll get it to you quickly. No question is too small, and no request is too much.
Bottom line
A numbers-correct, professionally restored GT500 convertible from the final year of production, with a completely restored undercarriage finished in correct oxide red, strong documentation, and a legitimate claim to being the very last one built. Show-quality condition, investment-grade provenance, and a story that sells itself. Cars like this don't come up often. When they do, they don't last long.
