1965 Ford Mustang Hardtop "The Willow Lane Literary group meets
every Wednesday. Our librarian, Winifred, hasn't been herself
lately. Her mind seems to be a million miles away, (cut to
announcer). Willow Lane hasn't seen Winnie since the '65 Deluxe
Mustang, she practically designed it herself, with embossed vinyl
seats, luxury all around, a new five dial instrument cluster, sport
steering wheel, the list goes on and on. And so does Winnie. Right
over to the wild side. Put a moment of truth in your life, with the
Deluxe Mustang '65!" Script from one of many television commercials
for the 1965 Mustang.
For consignment, a 1965 Ford Mustang hardtop showing 59,530 miles,
but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. This is a
midway project with newer paint and a rebuilt crate motor. Spring
is here as we write this and if you're looking for a project to
complete, this 'Stang might be the antidote!
Exterior
In what might be a nod to the Hertz cars, this one features black
paint and wide twin gold stripes that run from the front apron,
over the hood, continue on the roof, and trail down the deck lid
and latch panel where it flanks the iconic Mustang gas cap. The
inserts of the 15-inch Styled Steel wheels have been painted gold
as well for a nice cosmetic choice, although center caps are
missing. Up front, the running horse in a coral fronts an
octagon-laden grille, underscored by a straight front bumper.
Imperfections include panel gap issues in several places, some
lightly pitted brightwork including door handles, tail light
bezels, and bumpers, orange peel in the paint especially on the
hood, chipped paint, cracked paint at the base of the C-pillar,
various scratches, exposed bracket on front bumper, seam roughness
and rust at the rocker panel, and holes and rough paint on rear
valance.
Interior
Our consignor let us know the car needs an interior as part of the
restoration as the one present shows some age, starting on the door
panels which are intact but have rough spots, missing armrests, and
some hardware. The black vinyl bucket seats are torn with the
passenger side showing more damage for a change, while the rear
seats remain in good shape. Up front, a tired steering wheel,
broken badly at the center hub, fronts an equally weary dash that
would greatly benefit from refurbishment as it is classic in every
way. An AM/FM/Cassette radio resides in the center of the dash and
our glove box and dash pad have definitely seen better days. The
typical T-handle shifter is on the transmission tunnel over black
loop style carpet while up top, the headliner is mostly gone. The
barren trunk floor is the top of the gas tank and other than some
light surface rust, there's none to be found in the cargo hold.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, we have a rebuilt 302ci V8 with Ford Racing
aluminum heads, an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake under a Holley
4-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a rebuilt C4 3-speed automatic
transmission routing power to the Ford 8.8" rear axle. Headers are
on board to begin the exhaust process.
Undercarriage
Generally clean with plenty of typical surface rust and a pair of
frame rail repairs are noted. Dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster
mufflers and exits through polished but dirty chrome tips.
Suspension consists of coil overs in front and leaf springs in back
with brakes distributed as disc up front and drum out back..
Drive-Ability
She's a bit rough cosmetically, and as it happens, runs a bit rough
too with stalls and misses when accelerating. There's also an oil
light on, so we hasten a retreat but still test functionality. We
note the headlights and front turn signals are not working, there's
no high beam switch present, and the radio turns on but no sound is
provided. All other available functions work as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's a nice opportunity to get into a classic Mustang and add
your own creative and mechanical input to build, or finish, the car
of your dreams. Still amongst the quickest sellers here at Classic
Auto Mall, we encourage rapid lasso action on this pony.
