Blending high performance with genuine long-distance comfort, the
Maserati Indy stands as one of the more refined grand touring cars
of its era. Powered by an array of V-8 options, the 4.9-litre being
the most desirable, the Indy delivered effortless acceleration and
a commanding presence on the open road, making it one of the
fastest four-seat GT cars during its time. Its sleek yet purposeful
bodywork was penned by Vignale, whose design balanced muscular
proportions with elegant Italian restraint. Subtle flairs, smooth
character lines, and a low roofline gave the Indy a modern,
authoritative stance without sacrificing sophistication. Inside,
the cabin offered space for four, rich materials, and thoughtful
placements, with the gauges lined up to face the driver, all
hallmarks of Maserati's grand touring philosophy. Today, the Indy
remains an under-the-radar classic, prized for its V-8 performance,
Vignale styling, and refined versatility. A true love and passion
for the Maserati brand, The Oscar Roberts Estate Collection at one
time owned multiple Maseratis that were maintained in their fully
restored Sinclair Gas Station on North Main Street in downtown
Auburn, Indiana, which is true staple of the historic automotive
town. One of those Italian automobiles was this 1972 Maserati Indy
'4.9-litre' Coupe. Documented by a letter from then club president,
Seymour Pond of The Maserati Club, E.C., this example is a true
factory 4.9-litre engine, leading it to be 1 of just 300 examples
optioned of the total 1,135 built between 1969 and 1974. Known from
new, ownership history starts when it was built on May 11, 1971,
and finished in Silver Metallic over Rossa Connolly leather. This
example was then shipped to Grossman Motor Corp in New York and
purchased new by a Mr. Soucy in September of '71. From there, it
was acquired by Dr. Luc Lecount of Montreal. Ownership history
would follow with Richard Bain and then Peter Donaldson, both of
Toronto. Under Mr. Donaldson's ownership, this Indy was refurbished
and painted in its current color in 1980 by Kendrix Coachworks R.R.
In 1988, it was acquired by Edwardo Massaro, who then sold it to
Maserati Canada, which would lead to the Collection acquiring it in
August of 1995. Spending time between both his Georgia and Auburn
homes, Oscar enjoyed driving this example, accumulating 7,000 miles
on the odometer under his ownership. Documented maintenance can be
seen in the large file folder from throughout the years. The most
recent work was toward the end of 2024, as this Indy benefited from
a $5,300 mechanical servicing that addressed electrical components,
repaired the engine fan, installed new spark plugs, flushed and
bled the braking system, and performed an oil change. Accompanying
the sale of this Maserati is a large file of invoices and service
records, an owner's manual, and various ownership documents. Under
the care of the Collection for the last 30 years, this
well-optioned 4.9-litre V-8 Maserati Indy is the most potent option
would could chose and is truly a driver's car. Thanks to its extra
horsepower and exciting ZF five-speed manual gearbox, it remains an
excellent choice for weekend drives or collector car tours. * 1 of
