Developed under the umbrella of the Cord Corporation, the same as
the Auburn and Duesenberg automobile, the Cord 810 was a more
improved design and development of the Cord L-29. Offered in an
array of body styles, one of those 810 offerings was the Cord
Beverly, which was conceived as a formal four-door sedan that
paired avant-garde engineering with modern Art Deco styling.
Designed by Gordon Buehrig, who was also chief body designer for
Duesenberg, the Beverly shared the 810's revolutionary
front-wheel-drive layout, independent front suspension, and
Lycoming V-8 engine, eliminating the traditional driveshaft and
allowing for its dramatically low and loved stance. Distinguished
by its longer wheelbase and pillarless rear-hinged "suicide" doors,
the Beverly emphasized comfort elegance. Hidden headlamps, a
coffin-nose grille, and clean, uninterrupted body sides reinforced
its futuristic character. Though production numbers remained
limited, the 1937 Cord 810 Beverly stands today as one of the most
sophisticated American luxury sedans of the prewar era, blending
bold design with advanced engineering. A long-term resident of The
Oscar Roberts Estate Collection, Oscar acquired this 1937 Cord 810
Beverly 26 years ago. Before that, this Cord was owned by
Automation Devices Inc. of Pennsylvania in the late 1980s, who then
sold it to Larry Smith of Fairview, Pennsylvania. Mr. Smith would
then sell this Cord to Oscar Roberts in 2000. Under the coffin-nose
hood, upgrades were made for touring reliability, such as a
upgrading the water pump with a stainless-steel shaft and brass
impeller, installing a Pertronix electronic ignition and an
aluminum radiator, and adding Richardson U-joints and hubs. A
stainless-steel exhaust and fuel tank were also installed.
Furthering its drivability, in 2022, this Cord was converted to a
12-volt battery system, a new electric fuel pump was installed,
Stromberg EE15 carburetors were added, and the fuel tank was
cleaned. Today, the 12-volt system, has been converted back to a
six-volt battery system. A new wiring harness system will need to
be installed, as the dash and lights currently do not operate.
Finished in a classic Cigarette Cream with signs of enthusiast
enjoyment over a maroon interior with white piping, the Art Deco
styling is on full display on this 810 Beverly. Known for its
forward-thinking mechanics and styling cues such as pop-up
headlights and an engine turned dash, it's the best of American
engineering from the late 1930s. A wonderful example for someone
looking to get started in the classic car hobby, as it's a CCCA
Full Classic, this Cord would be a great addition to one's garage
