For Sale at Auction: 1930 Cord L-29 in Auburn, Indiana

Vehicle Description

In the summer of 1929, E.L. Cord introduced his fabulous new creation, which bore his name: the front-wheel-drive Cord L-29. The L-29 was offered initially in Sedan, Brougham, Phaeton, and the sporty and elegant Cabriolet form, at prices ranging from $3,095 to $3,295. Once a deal was struck, cars were supplied in chassis form to independent coachbuilders, like the closed models built by the Central Manufacturing Company in Connersville, Indiana, and the open models by Kalamazoo, Michigan's Limousine Body Company. Unfortunately for Cord, just as his newly launched car was reaching dealer showrooms, the Wall Street stock market crash of October 1929 devastated new car sales, especially in the upper section of the market. Despite a program of price cuts, sales never took off and the world's first practical front-wheel-drive production car was discontinued in 1932. In total, just 5,010 L-29s were built, and according to ACD historians, it is thought that around a mere 300 of all types exist today. The L-29 remains one of the most handsome, technically interesting, and collectible automobiles of the Classic Era. Offered from the Dr. William "Bill" G. Jackson Estate Collection is this dazzling, ACD Club Certified 1930 Cord L-29 Cabriolet, which is the recipient of an award-winning body-off-the-frame restoration. A resident of the Collection since 2002, Dr. Jackson acquired this Cord from the Detroit-based Barney Pollard Estate, who had owned it since 1942. Driven by Mr. Pollard for only a couple of months, it was then benched in his collection until Dr. Jackson acquired it. Comprehensively restored by Mike Brown of Mike's Auto Restoration in Luka, Mississippi, Mike mentioned, in a recent conversation, that during the restoration they had found the original wood to be in wonderful condition and a very solid and original overall car. During the multi-year process, the body was draped in a rich black with red accents throughout and its Art Deco appearance was further elevated with color-matched red wire wheels wrapped in wide whitewall tires and a tan convertible top. Dressed with an array of desirable beauty accessories that further its image and status, items include dual enclosed side-mounted spares adorned with sideview mirrors, dual cowl lights, an Art Deco stone grille guard, a front-mounted Pilot-Ray light, rear luggage rack, and a golf club bag door for when one desires to take a jaunt to the country club in true fashion. Highly decorated and celebrated, after its restoration was completed, this Cord was shown throughout the country at various prestigious events. During which, it collected its AACA Senior and National award badges, as well as its Diamond Jubilee award, all of which are affixed to the front license plate. Most impressively, in 2010 this Cord L-29 took second in class at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, further solidifying its attention to detail and originality. A lovely example of innovation and elegance from one of America's most ambitious automotive minds, this Cord L-29 Cabriolet offers both show field pedigree and undeniable presence on the road. Offered from a long-term ACD Club member, and certified by the Club, this L-29 is equally suited for display or refined touring and represents an opportunity to acquire a beautifully restored and highly awarded Classic Era icon that continues to captivate nearly a century later. * ACD Club Certified
