Launched for the 1978 model year, the "SC," or Super Carrera, was
initially intended to streamline the 911 lineup into a single,
well-balanced offering. At a time when shifting regulations and
economic pressures cast uncertainty over the future of performance
cars, the 911SC proved instrumental in ensuring the longevity of
the 911 itself. By 1981, the model had reached a refined state of
development. Power came from a 3.0-litre air-cooled flat-six
engine, producing approximately 180 horsepower in U.S.
specification, with higher outputs available in European markets.
Known for its durability and usability, the SC benefited from
improved reliability over earlier 911s, making it one of the more
robust and approachable variants of the era. Paired with a
five-speed manual gearbox, it delivered the engaging,
driver-focused experience that had become synonymous with Porsche.
Visually, the 911SC retained the unmistakable silhouette first
penned in the 1960s; its sloping roofline, pronounced rear
haunches, and upright headlights formed one of the most
recognizable shapes in automotive history. By the early 1980s, this
iconic design had matured into a timeless expression of form and
function, blending heritage with everyday drivability in a way few
sports cars could match. Finished in its original color, per the
accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity (COA), this
Porsche 911SC Coupe was completed on May 29, 1981. This 911SC was
then acquired new by its long-term owner, Larry Dent of Auburn,
Indiana. Dent was a true automotive enthusiast, as he was a former
Ford engineer, a Sports Car Club of America member since 1963, a
2017 SCCA Hall of Fame Inductee, and the former Executive Director
of the National Automotive and Truck Museum in Auburn, Indiana. A
faithful owner of this 911SC, he kept this example under his care
for 36 years among his other automobiles and motorcycles. Mr. Dent
would eventually sell this 911SC to the current owner in 2017, who
is also an avid Porsche collector and enthusiast. One of the most
iconic bodies to grace a European sports car chassis, it's finished
in its original color of U1 Platinum Metallic which presents well,
only showing minor signs of mellowing, and is elevated by its
modern Fuchs-style wheels wrapped in newer Continental tires. The
cabin features well-kept dark brown leather, bolstered sport seats,
air-conditioning, power windows, a factory optional electric
sliding sunroof, and a Sony stereo. Today the odometer shows just
22,051 miles, which are believed to be actual, but due to the age
of the vehicle, the title does read mileage exempt. Under the rear
whale tail spoiler, things were brought to another level in 2020,
as the air-cooled flat-six engine was overhauled, upgraded, and
tuned with various speed performance modifications carried out by
Bob Farmer of Farmer's Automotive For Air Cooled Porsches in
Greenfield, Indiana. Bob is a well-known enthusiast that has been
building race engines for Porsches since the '70s. An invoice of
this work is on file. The engine is backed by a five-speed manual
transaxle, and the suspension has also been upgraded, making for a
more spirited and comfortable ride. Accompanying the sale of this
Porsche is the previously mentioned Porsche COA, plus 911SC owner's
manuals, various invoice records, and previous registration
documents. With its mere two owners from new, thoughtful
performance enhancements, and passionate care, this 911SC captures
the essence of what makes these cars so enduring and offers its
next owner a highly engaging and rewarding driving experience that
is equally at home on any road. * A mere two owners since new
