"The first generation Dodge Super Bee, produced from 1968-70, was a
beefed up incarnation of the fifth generation Coronet two door
coupe. The "Super Bee" moniker derived from its "B" body platform
that it shared with the Dodge Charger and the Plymouth Road Runner.
Once the Road Runner posted impressive sales figures, the Dodge
designers received a request to come up with a low priced Dodge
muscle car. Senior designer Harvey Winn a new window received
credit for the Super Bee name and the logo with the "Scat Back" Bee
medallion." Goldeagle.com
For consignment, a 1970 Dodge Coronet Superbee 2 door hardtop
showing 59,663 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title
exemption. This true V-code example checks all the boxes and
although the redesign was polarizing at the time, Dodge still
managed to sell more than 15,000 Superbees with the hardtop being
the most common.
Exterior
Now donning a two stage application of the original color, it is
the butterfly wing design of the front bumper that grabs your
attention on this Dark Burnt Orange Metallic ride, independent
chrome corals that frame the grille and dual round headlights. From
there, it's the N96 "fresh air" hood that will have you moving
right, lest you be scooped up into the intake of this beastly
muscle car. In profile, the eye candy only increases with a brown
gator grain vinyl top, white Bumble Bee tail stripe, and 15-inch
Mopar Rallye wheels with letters out tires. Out back, horizontal
tail lights reflect the front shape in a more understated fashion
and connect with a white detail on the latch panel. Imperfections
include chips in the rubber bumper filler, various paint chips and
scratches and many are touched up, and scratches in the glaze of
several windows.
Interior
Its official Burnt Orange on the inside beginning with the handsome
door panels, a chrome trimmed cacophony of vertical patterning
framed in body colored metal, both presenting in excellent
condition. The split bench seat up front is stitched grain vinyl
and along with the rear bench, appears showroom fresh. This fine
spec includes a 3 spoke steering wheel ahead of a woodgrain faced
instrument cluster that puts the clock and 150mph speedometer
offset to the left of the column, and condition gauges to the
right. The wood warmly continues over the width of the dash, taking
in an AM radio along the way. Our shifter is on the column which
leaves the floor open and covered in black carpet while the
headliner and visors above adopts the burnt orange theme and all of
it is immaculate. A rubber mat covers the perfectly painted floor
of the trunk.
Drivetrain
Super clean and ready for show and go is the rebuilt 1966 440ci V8
under the hood with a six pack providing the fuel. It's mated to an
A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission from 1977 which
routes power to the 8 -inch rear axle with SureGrip. The engine
has headers attached and power steering is provided.
Undercarriage
The clean party continues on the underside where the dual exhaust
intersect with electrical cutouts just before an X-pipe, then
finally reaches a pair of Pypes mufflers, then out the back via
chrome oval tips. Disc brakes are supplied to all four wheels and
suspension consists of torsion bars up front and leaf springs in
back.
Drive-Ability
Even through the mufflers, the 440 provides a sweet exhaust note as
we wheel this legendary B-body onto the test loop where it exhibits
healthy acceleration, straight tracking, and satisfactory braking.
The brakes lights work if you jiggle the switch under the dash, but
the reverse lights do not illuminate. We hear the horn relay click,
but no honk accompanies it. All other functions on this fine Mopar
operate as they should, including the epic fender mounted turn
signals. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you've followed the adventures of Roadkill Garage and David
Freiburger over the years, you already know his first car was a
1970 Superbee that he still owns. Back in the 80's, he bought it
for $1,800 but that was a long time ago and the value and
desirability of B-body Mopars has increased exponentially. We have
a fantastic example here at the mall and will reserve a bit of envy
for the next owner of this great car.
