The 1946 Indian Chief represents the golden era of American
motorcycling, combining art-deco styling with raw mechanical
character. It's often compared to early Harley models like the
Knucklehead but stands out for its more dramatic, flowing
design.
Barn Find-
This iconic motorcycle was found in Maine inside a barn where one
family had owned it for over 60 years. Finding the bike was
documented on the TV show Barn Find Hunter with Tom Cotter and
quickly became known as the "Indian Chief barn find."
Historical Context-
Built right after World War II, when American manufacturers resumed
civilian motorcycle production. The brand Indian Motorcycle was one
of Harley-Davidson's biggest rivals. The 1946 Chief carried over
pre-war design elements but marked a return to consumer bikes after
military production.
Design Highlights-
The flowing, enclosed fenders are its most recognizable trait of
the Chief along with the classic teardrop fuel tank with Indian
script logo. They are often seen in vintage colors like Indian Red
or black plus blue like the one we have here.
Key Specs & Features-
The Indian Chief is known for its unique powertrain and features
such as the 74 cubic inch 1210cc V-twin engine, 3-speed hand-shift
transmission and has 40 horsepower to help power this ride. Top
speed would hit 85-90 mph with the rear chain drive. Up front, the
suspension is a Girder fork style and in the rear is early plunger
type suspension. One notable feature is the skirted fenders which
are often called "full valance" fenders.
Updates-
Once found, the motorcycle came back to North Carolina where it was
treated to full cleaning and detail along with having it
serviced.
