Often considered one of the high points in the muscle car era, and
even more so for Oldsmobile, the 442 stands proudly as a flagship
car for the Golden Age of high-horsepower vehicles. This particular
1968 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible is fully repainted in factory
Spanish Red exterior, complemented by its black vinyl power top,
shimmering chrome trim, and sporty Redline tires. Thanks to its
streamlined and powerful design, this awesome Olds looks aggressive
from any angle.
Inside, we find a beautiful and clean black vinyl interior. A
center console separates twin bucket seats, while a three-spoke,
power-assisted, wood-rimmed wheel sits just ahead of a
column-mounted 8,000-rpm tachometer, then a pair of gauges
measuring speed and engine temperature. Sliding HVAC controls keep
things simple, while the added cupholders and storage unit under
the dashboard provide an incredibly practical addition to any road
trip.
Under the hood, we find a 400-cubic-inch overhead-valve V-8 engine.
Topped with a single four-barrel Edelbrock carburetor, this big V8
expels spent gases through stock-style exhaust manifolds that feed
into a set of aftermarket mufflers, giving this old-school muscle
car a growl commensurate with its power. Power is routed through a
TH400 three-speed automatic transmission, before heading out to the
12-bolt rear, which transfers those ponies to the pavement via a
set of polished 14-inch wheels shod in those trick Redline
tires.
