Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1978 Chevrolet Corvette;
finished in white over black, this C3 has remained in the same
family since new and is offered for sale for the first time since
1978. Astronauts and fighter pilots most certainly did not drive
foreign cars in the 1960s and 70s... They drove Corvettes. The
original owner was an Air Force pilot who ordered this car while
stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany; he brought it back to
the states with him the next year, then kept it for the remainder
of his life. He and his wife continued to enjoy it during their
retirement on Florida's Gulf Coast up until a few years ago when
they moved to Savannah to be closer to their children and
grandchildren. The lifelong owner of this car passed away last
year, and we are selling his beloved Corvette on behalf of the
family. This C3 has among the most complete documentation we have
seen, with records to new.
Cosmetically, this car presents to a nice driver standard
throughout. Although some light patina is present, the fiberglass
body remains in good condition. Interior is believed to be mostly
original and there is light wear showing on the leather seating
surfaces, but overall this presents as a very honest and original
example that has been gently used, but well cared for throughout
its life. The headlight actuators are occasionally sticky and
sometimes need a little help but otherwise we are not aware of any
present service needs.
This Corvette has been garage kept and well maintained throughout
its life; major service within the last 20,000 miles includes a
cooling system refresh with water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses
and heater core; power steering pump and hoses; tune up and
carburetor rebuild; transmission rebuild; chassis lube, shocks,
wheel bearings and brakes (many of these items have been addressed
multiple times over the life of the car). Records indicate a valve
job and new head gaskets in 1985 at 50k miles.
The original numbers-matching 350 cubic inch V8 remains under the
hood; the L82 engine was the highest-performance option available
in 1978. It's mated to a Turbo-Hyrdamatic 400 automatic
transmission. Starts easily and runs and drives well. A/C has been
converted to R134a and is blowing cold. A trove of records
accompanies the sale, including all of the original purchase
documents, plus complete service records dating to new.
