Introduced as a 1970 model, the 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was a
pet project of then Chevrolet General Manager John Z. DeLorean.
Before taking the reins at Chevy, DeLorean had originated the
trend-setting 1969 Grand Prix 'personal luxury coupe' at Pontiac.
He had hardly settled into his new post before he began to advocate
a Chevrolet comparable to the much-admired Grand Prix.
Like the Grand Prix, the Monte Carlo 116-inch wheelbase chassis and
structure were based on GM's contemporary Fisher "A-body"
intermediates. However, the clean, graceful lines of the first
Monte Carlos were directly inspired by the 1967 Cadillac Eldorado,
as were its proportions. The new Monte Carlo's hood, measuring a
full six feet in length, would be the longest ever to appear on a
Chevrolet.
This handsome 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is finished beautifully in
Canary Yellow with a contrasting black vinyl top and brilliant
chrome over a cream interior. The Enhancing this classic's looks
are upgraded headlights and a set of 22-inch wire wheels for just
the right boulevard stance. The clean, cream-colored interior is
largely stock in appearance with a comfortable cloth bench seat,
air conditioning, factory AM/FM radio, clock and stock steering
wheel with SS logo.
Under the long hood is a healthy 350 cubic inch big block engine
paired with a TH350 automatic transmission that sends power back to
a 12-bolt rear end. The engine bay is mostly stock in appearance
and features power steering, Edelbrock carburetor, black Chevrolet
logo open-element air cleaner and power brakes linked to disc
brakes with drilled and slotted rotors on all four wheels. A
rumbling dual exhaust system flows back through Flowmaster
mufflers.
