Few cars in the history of the autoverse are capable of turning
heads quite as violently as this fantastic 1971 Pontiac Firebird
Trans Am. Decked out in a gorgeous Cameo White with a full-length
blue center stripe, this authentic Trans Am is one of just 2,116
built for the 1971 model year. With its bulging shaker hood,
upgraded wheels, and an unmistakable decklid spoiler, this Trans Am
is a stunning example of what a first-year Gen 2 looks like, and
why it has been popular over the course of the last half
century.
Inside, we find a stock and correct looking blue vinyl interior.
Matching bucket seats, separated by a center console, provide an
expansive view of the five pod gauge cluster that spans most of the
dashboard. A 160-mph speedometer and the Firebird's signature
'tic-toc-tach' sitting front and center of the three-spoke steering
wheel gives you a rough idea of just how fast this boulevard
bruiser really is, whenever the urge arises.
Under the hood sits an era-correct 455 cubic-inch V-8 engine. With
its baby-blue-painted block and heads, this motor is topped with a
Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor, while spent gases are expelled
via a dual-to-single-to-dual exhaust, capped off with a pair of
aftermarket mufflers. Those ponies are routed through a TH400
three-speed automatic transmission before heading out to the
ten-bolt rear end that transfers power to the pavement through
those upgraded 17-inch honeycomb-style wheels shod in Z-rated
rubber.
