"The Ramcharger is mighty tough. But inside, the cloth high back
front bucket and rear bench seats, included on the Ramcharger LE
models and shown here in Twilight Blue, are comfortable enough for
car driving dudes. Plus, each Ramcharger model offers an available
split back bench seat. And either the family or sport driver will
marvel at the firm feel of the new 15-inch deluxe steering wheel.
There's room. There's class. There's thoughtful design. You'll wind
up loving the 1987 Ramcharger from the inside out." From the 1987
sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1987 Dodge Ramcharger 150 LE with a title
verified 50,398 actual miles. Here's a nicely preserved full sized
SUV from the early days of SUVs when they were still rugged with
hints of interior comfort that would soon increase with the
introduction of soccer mom friendly SUV's in the early 90's.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Two tone was still in vogue in '87 and demonstrated here by the
single stage Twilight Blue Poly sandwiched by Ice Blue. Up front,
the Ramcharger shares its fascia with the entire '87 truck line and
includes the iconic hood ornament and of course, chrome bumpers.
Large mirrors flank the cabin and the rear side windows are not
only tinted, but fantastically curved to the roofline, but gives
way to the period's boxy rear end shared by full sized SUV's of the
time. Rectangular exhaust tips peek from behind each rear wheel,
those being factory 15-inch units wrapped in 255/70R15 tires.
Imperfections are few and include some spotting, chips throughout,
some bubbling on lower panel, a couple of small dings in rear
bumper, scratch in filler panel, and light rust on front bumper
wrap around.
Interior
A move towards commuter comfort can be seen immediately on the door
panels, with blue cloth inserts, chrome switches, molded plastic
with padded armrest, and carpeted lowers and both are in excellent
condition. Cloth is used on the bucket seats, blue like the
brochure version, in great shape with the exception of tears in the
driver's seat, while the rear bench looks showroom fresh and the
passenger seat almost on par. A handsome presentation awaits the
driver with a black steering wheel matching the black bezels and
faces of the gauges, while orange needles and text blend well with
the honey colored woodgrain faceplate around the cluster and
instrumentation and the updated AM/FM/CD radio. The dash pad is
unmarred. On our way back, we have a trunk that doubles as a
speaker box, sitting on a carpeted floor while the headliner above
looks pristine and features a rear vent.
Drivetrain
All's clean under the hood where you'll find a 318ci V8 with a
4-barrel carburetor mated to a date-correct A727 3-speed automatic
transmission. Power is sent to the rear axle only, a 9 " unit with
3.21 gears and limited slip.
Undercarriage
Clean and dry underneath where dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster
mufflers on their way to the double rear exit. There are no
catalytic converters on board. Power brakes include disc in front
and drums in the back with coil springs up front and leaf springs
in back noted as suspension.
Drive-Ability
Why, don't mind if we do! There's no shortage of vintage SUV fans
around here, but they'll have to watch from the sidelines as we
roll this boxy blue beauty onto the test loop and run it through
its functional examination. The brochure wasn't fibbing, this is a
comfortable ride and you can thank this '87 for the overwhelming
comfort of your Durango R/T! Meanwhile, the truck provides a great
view from on high and all functions operate on board just as they
should. And it's back to the truck room for this Dodge. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
If online testimonials are any measure of owners' satisfaction,
(and they are!), the Dodge Ramcharger lands high on the pleasure
meter with many claiming, "this is the best truck I've ever owned".
Most were used and put away wet back in the day, so to find one in
this kind of condition is increasingly rare. You and ewes and the
kids are going to love it!
